HOSTING SERVER ON DIFFERENT COMPUTER WHILE PLAYING ON ANOTHER.
I am losing faith in steam and soon they will lose my business. I have a computer on the same network as my laptop. on the laptop i would like to play my game, 7 days to die, and on the computer i would like to host my server. at the same time. its just me. im not sharing my account with anyone, im on the same network. and i have multiple computers and would like not to be restricted to one. Anyone have any ideas other than leave steam?

Well, I don't exactly how this is a problem of Steam, as opposed to being a problem with the game.

There are at least two distinct problems. First, you need a server that runs "outside" of your Steam account. Which means a free server in general, as other copy protection schemes aren't going to let you run any number of games on various computers either.

Second, you might have to tweak some networking details, if the game insists on connecting to a public IP address of the server, even if the server is sitting right next to you. Which can be tricky depending on your ISP -- currently, I don't have a useful public IP address that anything could connect to, so I might or might not be able to rig something, depending on the game. I'm working on the issue, though :-)

Install the dedicated server on the PC you want to run the server on and play from your current PC. Problem solved.

Just open a dummy Steam account for the dedicated server.
