High Ping But Good Internet Fix?

I got a new modem from charter. My download speed is fast at 8.01mbps. it says my connection is around 35-45ms. But whenever I play games, I get really high ping (up in the 200's.) Can anyone help me out?

Try different servers. Different locations have different routes, and different pings.

Thank you for replying, But, say I join a server that I see gives me "50" ping. About a minute into playing in the server, my ping will raise up over the 200's.
