Change Currency in Steam Store (not in another web browser)
It looks like there was an update today and now all the prices in the Steam Store are showing in the currency of the region you are in. The problem is I only have a US credit card and pay in US dollars, so it doesn’t make sense for me to see games listed in another currency.

I know that I can use Firefox or another web browser to change the cc=us, but I usually open the Steam store first when starting up my computer (and don’t want to have to log in to Steam in two different places).

Is there any way to change the currency display in the Steam Store itself?

Thanks for any help or suggestions in advance!

open the cc=us in the client?
Miriya Aug 19, 2014 @ 6:16pm
Thanks for the reply.

Again, I know that I can open a browser window for cc=us, but I wanted to know if they ever addressed the issue for their own client - especially since they seem to be forcing it on the users.

It doesn't make sense if I have a US account with US payment methods that I have to see prices in another country just because I'm living there.

im having the same problem, i use US dollers but on my store it has yen. i have tried the cc=us but it doesnt work for me, once i click the game it turns back to yen. i also cant add steam funds to my wallet in the cc=us thing.

I have something similar to Larry. My wallet (and only my wallet) is in Yen. Everything on the store page is in USD and when I add to cart it remains USD. My wallet changed to Yen within the last few hours. It was in USD this morning. All my settings are set to the US. Also the cc=us link does not change it in any browser. Even downloaded Firefox for the first time ever to test it.

Looks like it is affecting users in Japan as the Steam client is showing in yen but my Steam account balance is in dollars. And yes, this started happening this morning for me as well.

It seems counterintuitive to display prices in yen when my wallet is in dollars and without a setting to toggle it.

I wonder if you complete the checkout if it will show you dollars or yen..

If you are in Japan, or connecting to Steam from a Japanese IP address, you now have to use yen. If you need to use another currency, you will need to contact Steam support. They will basically tell you to use a browser and purchase through that. There is no way to change you currency in the Steam client.

Wow, this is really not cool. I am pretty annoyed by this change. I want to use my American credit card to purchase funds and games and such. I don't want to have to use yen for this simply because I am in Japan.

I'm really annoyed with this. I can't use my credit card whatsoever. Next thing you know they'll be charging 8000 yen for games like the do at the brick and mortar shops here.

Unbelievable, Gabe....

Well, tough basically. I'd far rather they had stuck to USD too. That way we wouldn't have lost the ability to purchase several hundred games today. But Valve do what they do regardless of what customers actually want.

Good customer service would me allowing people with American credit cards to be able to pay for goods using that currency regardless of the region. I'm really surprised by this move. I understand offering games in the local currency and all that, but to cut out the ability for American consumers to purchase using their credit cards is pretty ridiculous.

Sorry, but just because you're American, you don't get preferential treatment. That said, if you contact Steam support, they may let you purchase with your credit card in USD from the US store via a web browser. But anything you do through the Steam client will be in JPY until you return to the US. Also note that you will be dependant on Japanese release dates. Even if you purchase from the US store. So, for example, if you purchase Far Cry 4 from the US store, you'll still be waiting until the end of December to play it.

This is basically the same for anyone in a region other than their normal one. Just replace countries, currencies, etc., as appropriate.

No one said anything about preferential treatment. There is no need to suggest that I am asking for that.

That being said, I don't think you understand the situation. You can't use the web browser trick anymore.

The point is that holders of US credit cards should be able to use those cards and pay for products in that currency. Same should apply for a person holding a Japanese credit card shopping from the States. This isn't about preferential treatment.

Have you contacted Steam support? When you go through the check out process, they even tell you to do so if you are not in your normal country. Look for the following:

I verify that I live in Japan
If this is not correct, please contact Steam Support

As it is, holders of a specific credit card should not immediately expect to pay in their own currency. That's not how credit cards work. You pay in the currency the store charges you in, and if needed, your credit card company will convert that to your own currency (and possibly charge a small fee for doing so).

See, that's hysterical, because I don't live in Japan. I haven't lived in Japan for over a year. When I originally created my steam account I was in the US, as well. There is no reason for it to randomly change to Yen... I haven't used a Japanese IP in at least two years. For the last year I was in Japan I used a US VPN. So, this change was idiotic and entirely unneccessary.

Well if it's happening to you and you're not in Japan, then you know. Do the sane thing. Contact support. Of course, I wouldn't tell them about the VPN. They don't like that. They will likely disable your account if you tell them that.
