WarHammer Dawn of war won't start
I bought/installed the game, but when I click the icon it just says "preparing to lauch" etc, and nothing ever happens. This is one of the reasons I use consoles. Stuff works.

Try running the game in compatibility mode for Windows 98/ME.

You usually do that by right clicking on the icon right? There isn't any option for that.

You'll need to dig in the game files to find the executable.
Right click the game in Steam, Click Properties, Local Files, Browse Local Files.

Should be called something like W40K.exe.

Yes, I found it. (That's exactly what it's called)

I did "troubleshoot compatibility" and that fixed nothing.

I can't find any other fix online. Many others have experienced this problem as of late. You can try posting on the DOW hub, the Relic Community Forums[forums.relicnews.com], or getting help from Sega[help.sega.com] directly if you don't end up getting an answer in this thread.

Note that if this occurs for other games besides Warhammer, you may have a program interfering with Steam.

I'm on windows 8.1 (giant mistake since nothing works with it)

The only thing I have found is running it for win 98/ME...not sure why since the game came out in 2006. Anyway... this seems to change SOMETHING since now it prompts me if I want it to make changes to the computer, but it still crashes upon launch.

Here's a thread in which a game developer is participating.

Cynthia of Relic Entertainment suggests making sure you've got all your Windows updates installed. Additionally, cleaning up the .NET Framework seems to help as well.

Make sure UAC isn't getting in the way either (not sure if it's the same on W8). You can try running it as an administrator on top of that.

Thanks a lot for pointing me in the right direction. Hopefully I figure this out soon.

Had the same issue, I ran it as an administrator and in windows 7 mode with no problems. On win 98/me there was no screen, only sound.
