Trading Cards and Booster Packs
So even though I've read about them I still don't understand what they're for or what they do. Can someone link me to a simplified explanation or just break it down for me on here? I know the basics like how the trading market works for cards and how to make a pack once you have the cards, I just don't get what they're for or how you earn card drops.

Also, can you just send cards or do you have to trade other cards for them?

The cards are used to craft badges, once you collect all the cards in a particular set, you can craft that set's badge. The badge rewards you with 100xp, a discount coupon for the Store and a random background and emoticon for that game. During the main Steam sales, the coupons are replaced by sale trading cards which have their own badges and rewards.

Thank you. I think I understand them now. So they have a purpose beyond leveling you up and giving you background stuff?

And is buying and trading the only way to get all of the cards?

To expand on what MancSoulja said.

Booster Packs grant you 3 random cards (they can all be the same card, mind you) from that game's deck.

You can acquire booster packs by buying them from the Steam Community Market, by creating them with gems (this will only work for games you own.) or by receiving them as lucky, random drops (once you've acquired all the droppable cards from the deck [which is half rounded up]).

If you don't want to collect the cards and create decks with them, you can alternatively - like the name implies, trade them away (for cards you do want, for example) - or sell them on the Steam Community Market.

Gems can be acquired either by buying them in 1000 gem -sacks from the Steam Community Market, by trading for them or by turning applicable items from your inventory into gems. (The last being not-so-recommended.)

That's pretty cool. I don't have any duplicates of cards so I guess if I want to make a pack I need to buy the missing cards?
Also do you have to trade for them with your friends or can you just give them away?
nice ty all for information

You'll have to acquire a booster pack, buy or trade in for the missing cards, yeah.

Trading -forums can be for example,

If you send a trade (or trade offer). You can trade expecting nothing in return. This is practically "gifting" them away.

You should see which cards your friends have (that you don't) by looking at the bottom when inspecting the badge in progress. http://steamcommunity.com/my/badges/

I had to phrase it like that so hopefully I wouldn't look too bad but honestly I'm just going to try to get all of my friends to gift me their trading cards since they don't use them. I guess I'll go ahead and explain what they are to them first so I'm not too terrible of a human being
ty bro that so helping

But all in all, level only adds +5 to your friendslist cap each level, allows you a showcase every 10 levels, increases your chances for a booster pack by 20% every 10 levels (chances which are fairly low anyway if you're in a pool against a huge variety of active, highly leveled users) and whatever benefits there may be from having a level during holiday events (typically level 8 being the magic number.)

While you'll gain levels each 100 XP in the 0-10 stage, you'll require 200 XP for 10-20, and 300 XP for 20-30 and so on.
