GTX 970 Wattage
How many Watts would my PSU need to power a GTX970?

The GTX 970 can consume up to 145 watts. However your GPU is not the only factor, the other hardware in your computer will determine how much power you need. Assuming no overclocking, a 500 watt PSU would probably suffice.

So it only consumes 145 Watts right? But my current PSU is only about 350 Watt, would it work? I also have a 500 Watt PSU as well that I'm thinkign to install
It would not be safe or wise to use a 350 watt supply to power a PC that runs a GTX 970. Also any power supply you use is going to need at least one, and probably two 6-pin connectors (depending on the GPU manufacturer, possibly even a 6--pin and an 8-pin) to power the GTX 970, as it cannot draw enough power from the PCI-E slot. Your power supply also needs to be able to push 30 amps on the 12v rail.

My 500 Watt PSU should hopefully do the job

I normally give at least 100W buffer space and go for a gold rated PSU. You can't be too careful when selecting a PSU because they can be so destructive when they fail.
I have a 500 Watt PSU, probably gonna install it tomorrow, and then I'll go looking for the
GTX 970 in stores(Hopefully, it doesn't cost too much)

True that

The Nvidia specs are inflated to cover both shoddily constructed PSU's that are sold as 500W but are barely able to provide 400W, and in case an underpowered PSU does blow up and they get sued.

Rule of thumb: 150W for the 970, 100W for the CPU, 100W for the rest. A quality 350W PSU can power this just fine. The only question remaining: is the current PSU he has quality? Still, since he already has the 500W, it's easy enough to switch them out.

Hey Guys? Just another sub conversion, Is the GTX 960 and the GTX 970 fairly similar in terms of performance? And if so, what's the Wattage of a GTX 960?

i have a 970 and a 500wt power supplie and it works just fine.

My old 500W PSU did not survive my GTX 970. Overheated and burned out a week after installing the card. But was a pretty cheap brand and already a few years old. Switched to a 650W quality brand and had no problems since then.
So, while 500W or even lower may be enough, make sure its not some cheap brand.
That can go wrong fast.

That can get screwed over even further if it's bellow 500 Watts eh? Thanks mate :)

The 970 offers about 30% performance improvement in benchmark tests over the 960.

I suggest you try to get a 1060 6gb though. It offers more performance than a 970, and will work just fine with your 500w psu

That's not really too cheap, but I'll look into it

so what power supply you have ?

If it's a decent one , I'd also suggest a 1060....
not unless you can get a 970 on sale for $250 or less\

just looking here, https://www.nowinstock.net/computers/videocards/nvidia/gtx1060/
and there are 1060s available from 219 and up (not coulnting the mini) ...

I have another PSU it's old but it contains 500 Watts, so I'm probably gonna switch over my 350W one for the 500W
