Can you use a xbox 360 controller on steam games?
Xbox 360 controllers are the cheapest, but I don't know whether I can even use them. Can I? Or are they too old?

Yup, been using mine for 100s of different games no issues thus far! :)

You can and its plug and play so it should just work

No reason why you shouldn't be able. Any controller that is fully XInput compatible will work fine in current games. Which the Xbox 360 controller does.
As long as it is an original one from Microsoft.

Third party controllers that look like an Xbox 360 gamepad are a bit hit or miss.
