Is Java safe?

A game is requesting me to download Java to play. But how safe is Java? Why wouldn't it already be installed on my computer?

Java can be safe, just ensure install latest version from official source.

May e you're thinking of Flash as that not safe due to always having security flaws, and used at your own risk, Adobe stop giving updates to it, and most sites replace it by using Java, HTML5, and etc...

Try to avoid Java at all costs..!!

It firstly needs a "Runtime Environment" to be able to run, just like an extraordinary virtual machine, and personally in my eyes it is not a computer programming language. Java is also still highly unsecure. Just check the Web for more and additional informations..

JavaScript (JS) is an other topic and sorta ok.

Java is a platform independent programming language since 1996 and constantly expanded. You can get the latest JRE/JDK from Oracle though open source implementations do exist.

Minecraft, for example, is a very popular game which was first implemented in Java (the Java Edition, still existent and updated as of today).

As with any program, only trust the executable if you trust its origin. This is not limited to Java (.jar files), but also applies to machine code and any other form of executable in general.

Every program needs a runtime environment. For most Windows programs, they use the .NET runtime environment.
The JVM isn't anything extraordinary.

I'm guessing you may be referring to the recent Log4j fiasco? That's an issue with the Log4j library itself, not Java. Anyone can introduce arbitrary code execution in any other programming language.
Java has been around for almost 3 decades now - countless programs use it. Minecraft was written in Java, Amazon Web Services were written in Java, basically every Android mobile app was written in Java.

Extended thirdpart app, is not mandatory installed and a MS problem with what a game devs require for other software.

a none gamer pc dont need any of it.

and that your problem here you are a gamer, and now you need to either do as game devs says or not. ( you can find 100 well maybe not 100 but many codec to thirpart app needs they are seen as module and also reduce DL size and installer with script that run thirdpart app, after main install game app )

and there is no way any here can say it also will be 100% safe, any here have seen security issue with alot of things, so NO none will do that. ( most of this is lack of update and still user own problem ) even then that piece of software is part of the problem in the first place.

3079 -- Block Action RPG simply refuses to do anything without the Java download.

3089 -- Futuristic Action RPG tells me the same thing, but then a little box pops up and lets me start without downloading anything. If both requires Java, just curious why the one allows me to continue without downloading anything, while the other simply shuts down. Thank you.

Java is simply a programming language. Each program is stand alone and the creators can do whatever they want.

Both games (three altogether) were purchased on Steam.
