Xbox one wireless controller auto shutting off if steam is open
Since the latest updates my xbox one wireless controller (with official dongle) won't stay on with steam opened. The controller will connect just a few seconds and then turn off. I have to close steam, turn on the controller and then reopen steam again to use it but if by any means the controller turns off it would not turn on again until steam is closed.

I have had the same problem as you. It is as you described, while having steam open the controller will not stay on/connected. I must turn on the controller with steam closed and make sure it doesn't go to sleep.

Anyone find a solution?

Have you tried it by connecting the controller through a USB cable? Mine works fine that way, don't have a dongle to test a wireless connection.

Nope. It does the same. Hope that after the native DS4 controller support is finished they will adress this issue.

Strange, works fine for me. Have you tried running the XBox accessories app to update the game pad firmware?

Yep did it multiple times I even tried pairing it with a Microsoft Surface and same results.

For me the culprit was nVidia Geforce Experience (GE), specifically the Share feature. This issue started for me after I had turned on the Share overlay in GE, so I could monitor framerates in a game. I disabled the feature from the settings menu in GE, restarted Steam and now my controller reconnects again after going to sleep.

So short version: Open Geforce Experience, open settings by clicking the gear icon, click the toggle button to disable Share, restart Steam.

I've heard that the problem is the Anniversary Update and something called exclusive mode that is conflicting with steam big picture drivers.

This is an old thread I know, but for anyone looking for a solution, Viscerian's solution worked for me. Disabling the Share overlay in Geforce Experience solves this problem. Now i need to find another FPS meter
