Just buy the Xbox 360 or the Xbox One -pad for PC. Doesn't really need you but to plug it in for it to install its drivers. If you end up getting DualShock 4, you will have to obtain DS4Windows or other such drivers to actually use it on PC games.

but if you want simplicity and compatibility, go with a 360 or Xbone controller like Teutep mentioned.
EDIT: That reminds me that I did leave the Steam Controller completely unmentioned. It allows for a nice variety of customization if you can get past the initial learning curve it may impose on you.
Dual shocks are my favorite controllers but in some cases they may need a third party program
to be able to play games on steam with them
