How to disable (absolutely) steam controller support?

Today I ran into the following problem: my PS5 controller, despite all boxes being turned off in the steam controller support settings, when the steam is running, changes its behavior, i.e. a white LED indicating the controller number appears, which does not happen in a clean connection to Windows 10. When the steam is turned off, the controller is working properly. When the steam is opened, the reaction described above occurs. Then the controller does not work in all games in which it worked so far. So far I have played with disabled support, among others. in Rocket League, which resulted in a very low imput lag. I don't want to run controller support as it can have a negative effect on it, besides, then steam forces its key bindings which is extremely annoying. If someone had a similar problem and found a solution, I would be very grateful for your help.

I physically reseted the settings of the pad itself, disconnected and reconnected to windows, turned on and off the steam controller support, nothing helped.

Hi Guys, I had this same issue the past few days. I was hoping that Sviat got his fixed. After trying several things, here is what worked for me after trying the above solutions:

1. select controller and then select "hide". That should do it, honestly. Previously, we had to manually do it, I think, 3 months ago with this same issue, by editing the config.vdf file and creating or editing the controller_blacklist. When I tried to do it this time, it just messed up the controller and CREATED a white light where there was none.

2. If need be, make sure you have playstation support and all that other stuff unchecked in general controller settings.

3. If need be, make sure you have steam input disabled.

Okay, never mind, guys. It worked for a short while. Next time I started up steam/rocket league it no longer worked. Gotta go with USB until a fix is posted I suppose!

I will tintingaroo! I'm kind of an idiot and I'm not understanding the minimal requirements for setting up the environment. I'm going to give this a shot today though and see how it goes.

Tintingaroo, when I go to create the text files in step 1, I'm unable to pin the .exe shortcuts to the taskbar. I think Windows is not recognizing these as programs and is still recognizing them as text files. Am I missing a step? Windows will let me pin notepad to the taskbar, but not the individual enhanced and dinput files.

If Windows is still recognising them as text files (if you run them they will open with Notepad / text editor, or you see the icon hasn't changed), then you likely have file name extensions hidden.

Tintingaroo, found it. Had to go into view and make sure not to hide file extensions of known file types.

I did the rest of the your instructions including using the video for the chord configuration.

Initially, this did not work, and I had the white light come on my PS5 controller. Then I enabled playstation support in steam (the device is unhidden as you said it works better unhidden).

Now it seems to work perfectly! Man this is annoying but huge kudos to you for this post!!!!!

Bump please, i got the same issue since yesterday... All was working well, but now Steam is hijacking my controller.. and cannot seem to turn it off.. works well when steam is not running but when steam launches it switches to the Steam controller support and it is ♥♥♥♥, even when i unticked all the boxes.

This was the exact problem I had and the fix worked. I don't know how or why it happened perhaps I did something to "unhide" it or there are some keyboard shortcut I hit or some combo of buttons on my PS4.

Anyway much obliged!


Anyone curios I would describe my issue as:

Steam took over one of my two controllers, the light blue light on the PS4 controller is normal, it changed ONE of them to DEEP BLUE, and it stopped working on Rocket League but was recognized and useable in BigPicture (which is annoying in iteslf).

So the solution above, to HIDE the controller in STEAM, worked.

UPDATE: Just discovered we can still add the device to the blacklist via Steam, it's just that the 'HIDE DEVICE' UI option is not presented for non-Generic controllers.

1. Steam > Settings > Controller > General Controller Settings

2. Highlight your controller and press Start or equivalent (so Options button on the DS5)

(Should see UNHIDE DEVICES if you move the mouse/highlight another option so the UI refreshes)

3. Power-cycle controller.

(OP's wired experience differs from mine though)

You can manually add the controller to Steam's controller blacklist.

1. Close Steam (e.g. Steam > Exit).

2. Navigate to and open with Notepad: [STEAM INSTALLATION] / config / config.vdf

3. Do a search for: controller_blacklist

If it doesn't exist, go to the end of the file and before the last }, insert a new line then paste in:
"controller_blacklist" "54c/ce6"

If it does exist add the DualSense VID/PID to it:
"controller_blacklist" "54c/ce6"
(if it already contains a VID/PID, insert a comma and then the DS5 VID/PID e.g. "45e/2e0,54c/ce6")

4. Save and close

You can remove it from the blacklist manually (remember to quit Steam first) or via Steam's Controller Settings screen where you'll see the Unhide Devices button at the bottom, next to the Back button.

Please help. Im currently facing similar issues after the latest steam update. I've been using the dualshock controller to play steam games both on my laptop and my PC. Before updating to the latest steam update, i could use the controller both wired and wirelessly. but then after updating the steam app, i can only use the wired method.

The controller connects just fine to both my PC and laptop via bluetooth, but WITHOUT opening the steam app. The controller disconnects from the device immediately right after i open the steam app, even when i havent logged in, and cannot be reconnected at all unless i hard reset the controller. it seems the steam app force the controller to disconnect!

The problem is not with the controller because i still can use it playing any other game outside steam. Also not with the bluetooth dongle too cuz i even buy a new one!
Heres why: at first i didnt face this problem on my laptop, but only on my PC. Then i realised that the only thing different is the software update. The settings are all exactly the same. I hadn't updated the steam app on my laptop. I got curious so i updated it, and boom! the problem appeared on it aswell :(

Just recently my steam started messing up again. I had it working perfectly and I don't know what happened. I don't want my Steam to pick up my ps5 controller cause it's being used for something else. I have went it to controller settings and disabled the ps5 controller, I've hid it, I have went into the game I want to play (hogwarts legacy) and I have disabled it there. No matter what I do when I launch Hogwarts Legacy it picks back up the ps5 controller, I want to only play hogwarts legacy using my xbox controller. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it, I had it fixed up until like a week ago, now I went to play again and it's messed up

Are you on the Steam beta? It looked like some PS4 things were addressed in SDL but I don't know if they're included with the Steam beta or if they would help... I don't own an actual DS4 to experiment with.

I opt out of steam beta and and erased 'RUMBLE' from the system environment variable and it works! thankyouu tintingaroo.. i almost buy a new controller hahahah u saved me :")

p.s i enabled the ps4 configuration and unhide the controller with this method
