how to datamine a game

i was browsing on youtube one day and spotted a stream on my fav game, it was about datamining the game to view its unreleased/old sprites, and it intrested me, i watched the whole stream, and even asked the streamer how to do it, ive tried doing what he told me and nothing, does anyone know how to do it? im using HXD

You open the game folder, for starters. Rather likely the assets are packed so you search the web for a program to open this format or to open the archives of a specific game.

For Valve games, I've been using GCFScape.

Well, have you tried opening the game folder and see what you see there?

yes, ive done that, i just want to go through the games sprites, but found nothing so far

in the normal game files that you can access from steam theres only exe, some sound files, data and some random steam api idk
in appdata/Local there is save files, autocloud and some meta folder, ive searched all of these folders for some kind png and end but nothing, ive tried asking the streamer on his discord but hes offline, i could show you screenshots of the files if you want

Well, that DATA that you just mentioned, would be it. Whoever told you, all games saved their assets as PNGs, is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ idiot. Games tend to use own packing formats.

They may still be PNGs, but inside an archive or virtual file format system.

hmmm, i think i found the sprites, but cant seem to open them, idk im not experienced with this stuff

Look that stuff up online. Use a search engine. Or, if you ask in forums, at least provide some detail on the situation so someone might know something.

i figured it out already, thanks for the previous advice tho
