Controller Help Please | Xbox to PS button layout
Whenever I open a game while using a controller, the game tends to default to Xbox layout (ABXY) even though I am using a PS4 controller (XO◻△). Although some games provide the option of changing keys layout like Monster Hunter World, or Divinity Original Sins 2, some like Elden Ring, or GTA5, or Witcher 3 don't.

I wonder if there's actually a steam setting that exists that would allow me to view all games using the Playstation layout. Although I adjust by learning the ABXY layout from Xbox, I still find it annoying. What am I missing?

Click steam in left hand corner, settings, controller, configure controller settings, play station 4.

On my "top left hand corner" on the menu with "Steam / View / Friends / Games / Help" I selected:

Steam > Settings > Controller > and it says "General Controller Settings" not configure controller layout.

General Controller Settings > and I have my "PlayStation Configuration Support" checked.

Sorry but I am not really following :/ I don't read anything that says "layout" which is exactly what I'm looking for.

My apologizes, I have corrected my initial post to the correct details. Does the PlayStation configuration support help at all?

No... but actually the PS4 controller is usable. I'm annoyed that they always use Xbox layout by default. I'm trying to get used to it but yeah, it's just not natural given that I've only used Sony products.

Like for example, whenever it says "press the blue X button" I always end up pressing the 6 o'clock button by accident instead of the 9 o'clock button. It's hard to break habit..

I agree that is quite annoying, I will further investigate a fix and get back to you on a solution.

Thank you mate! I've been trying to look up solutions myself. I'm starting to think there's actually no way around it and perhaps some PC games are designed in a way that assumes one only uses Xbox controller for PC because of Microsoft 😥but if there's a way then I'd be happy.

Sony only ever-so-recently published an own driver for those gamepads. To put it differently, the existence of PS gamepads on (Windows) PCs has been none for many years.
Under these circumstances, no wonder game devs tend to treat them as non-existant! Outside of former PS exclusives, there's a handfull of games supporting those things themselves, including bringing their own prompts (Skullgirls, Rocket League).

Apparently steam use to be able to remap the controller buttons.

Still is able.

Apparently Big picture mode > settings > only check guide button focuses steam. unplug controller and plug back in. Don't need big picture after you did that.

If a game supports PS4 controllers and it's button layouts natively you can head to your library, right click the game, properties, controllers and disable Steam Input.

The Steam input tricks the PS4 controller into being an XBOX controller that's why the XBOX prompts display more often and it works wonders for a great many of the games with no PS4 support.

As for the prompts themselves if disabling Steam Input doesn't work because the game lacks controller support you would need to check if a modder for said game as created a PS4 button prompt mod.

I'm not sure there are any other options. The last time I tried one of those controller apps they too suffered with the XBOX button layouts in-game, not sure if that as changed.

Just tested this, I turned off Steam Input and my controller stops working, LOL. I'm gonna cry.

Well, if the game, for reasons you quoted, doesn't support PS gamepads, then XBox prompts it is. Either that or modding.

Don't spread alternative facts! Valve even facilitate for modders to upload mods to Steam so players can download them. From Steam.
