Pro Controller is detected by Steam, but not by any games
Title says it all, lol. The controller works with games outside of Steam and works in big picture mode, but none of my games will pick it up no matter what I do. I feel like I've tried everything at this point, any help anyone could give would be much appreciated.

when you look at a game properties there is a controller tab options with a line saying ''overide for'' with the game name.

did you tried to turn that option to ''forced on'' to see if things change for those games ?

Do you mean the 'enable steam input' option? If so then yes, but still nothing :(

It worked okay for a few minutes when I connected it for the first time (just bought it today), but then immediately stopped working when I tried to configure the button mappings in the Steam controller layout menu. I have no idea what went wrong.

Potential Solution

I was having the same problem, using a Nintendo Switch Pro controller (and worse--for support reasons--on a custom Linux machine playing a Windows game with proton).

But I managed to get things working after looking at what @Lemonfed mentioned, and finding the settings menu you two were talking about.

So if you (anyone--for OP @Corgi, skip to step 5) haven't already tried this in particular:

Screen Shots [imgur.com]

Step 1:
Click the Steam text in the top left corner of the desktop window.
This will open a sub-menu.
Click Settings in the sub-menu to open a Settings window.

Step 2:
In the Settings window, on the left-hand side, click the row that says Controller .
This will show a section called Controller Configuration on the right-hand side.
Click the GENERAL CONTROLLER SETTINGS button.
This will open a new window with a heading Controller Settings at the top left of the new window.

Step 3:
Check the 3 boxes:
  • Switch Pro Configuration Support
  • Use Nintendo Button Layout (this is optional)
  • Generic Gamepad Configuration Support (Not sure if this box is necessary)

If I misunderstood which "Pro" controller you're using (maybe xbox/ps4/5 pro controller?), just click the relevant boxes for your controller--that's really all that matters for this step.

Step 4:
Now, in your game Library on the left-hand side,
with the games listed in rows by name and icon, right click your game,
opening a sub-menu with:
> PLAY
Add to >
Manage >
Properties...

And click Properties... to open game specific property settings

Step 5:
On the left-hand side, click the CONTROLLER row.
This will show the "Override for <game-name>" you and @Lemonfed mentioned.
Select " Use default settings ".

Take whatever steps necessary to ensure the changes are applied if it varies per operating system (in my case, it seems I just close the settings windows for changes to apply--that or it applies as soon as it is selected?), and start your game.

Hope this helps you.

I don't know why this isn't working for me... On a different machine / steam account, these controllers work, but not on this machine. I can test them fine in the general settings, and I have tried to 'enable steam input' in the game specific settings, but 'press any button to start' doesn't work on either controller. I've selected the 'official' layout for each pad.

Did you manage to fix it?

This fixed it thank-you. Ofcourse there is additional f settings hidden in game props that somehow affect in game detection when by reading them / disabling them elsewhere, they really should not be..
