then you were an idiot for accepting a payment using a gift card.

1. fake code - nothing happens to you, you will get an invalid code error message when you try to redeem it
2. real code - code works, you get your money added to steam. if there is a problem with the money (a chargeback is issued), the money is removed from your account and you wallet funds may be in the negative till you pay steam back. and you will need to pay steam first before you can buy anything on steam.

If your account somehow gets banned for fraud, all linked accounts can be restricted.

steam has been locking down accounts buying gifts for other accounts using wallet funds. an account with no games using their wallet funds to buy games for another account may have their ability to gift games blocked unless the game is bought using outside funds (credit card, paypal, etc).

better to just put the money on your account instead of making an alt that may not be able to gift games using the steam wallet funds. just dont spend them for a few months to be safe.

I would not use codes. For example if he has it from a gift card that he keeps, he would have a proof of purchase. If he knows other things, maybe he could convince a support.

You could look if you can use a secondary email on paypal, so he can send the money with paypal, not even knowing your main email. Read about it.
