Default image viewer via Steam screenshot module. Steam (?) doesn't remember user choice.
Hello!
I've tried searching for an answer, but sadly found just one thread from 2017:
https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/0/1485482132155041568/

The issue is pretty much the same. I've never experienced it before, and I have been using Steam since I've grabbed retail Orange Box.

Windows 10 x64, up to date just. When opening screenshots in 'Screenshot Uploader' there's a popup 'How do you want to open this file?" with a selection of apps to choose grom, leading with IrfanView (my default viewer since forever), then Windows image viewer, and then 'other options like Adobe apps or Firefox.
There's a checkbox 'always open 'jpg files with a selected app' but checkign it doesn't change anything.

I've checked the default image viewer in W10 options and it's IrfanView.
Just to be sure double-checked .jpg file type association and it's also IFx64, as with every other image file on my PC.

Any tips? Not sure what and where can be done. On surface level nothing comes to my mind.
It's a small thing but in the long run very grating.

Try the OS settings, then microsoft picture view app, make it default, or reset it to default as repair or reset its userdata

its through the windows "cog" wheel and app controll ( not the old controll panel )

never seen this my self , unless win7 and picture viewer app took over the extension , and uninstall app could be set to not assciated to a app. ( and is it not that what you have here. )
never seen this in win10 most of the time it crawl back to previous app as default.

it do sounds like you try the right thing , but you did not scroll further down and read the rest/repair/´back to begining reset was possible.

thirdpart app use system default. and that why they ask you. they do what system tell them it can use.

same as 7-zip it can take over other arcive, this is same.

make a screenshort , use paint, past it in there , then save as ".jpg" thats what i did i convert a .png file with paint as test to check system, its a long time ago i had seen issue with that.

use
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
and
sfc /scannow

more a system check, what if other things has cause this, and no i dont know what that is.
only you have the clue here.

gl with it.

Thx for the tips, I'll try it. Ultimately it might end up being one of 'those things' that break up and fix 'themselves' without any user input. With, for example, some minor change in introduced in next update of Steam client or more likely- Windows update. And who reads those changelogs...
Not 100% sure since I did few things, but I think reset to default settings in Windows control panel and then setting up default image viewer fixed it.
