Like all Gmod resources, if you want to use them, technically and legally speaking you MUST own the game. Most gmod resources that are game rips are absolutely 'very dark grey area' illegal items, but most publishers and developers know better than to try and smack down small fry people making gmod servers. They're not making money off it.
But since the HL source files ARE part of a product that is a paid-game, you do have to own it, if you want to use it.
If your friends absolutely refuse to accept free games then it doesn't sound like they're really interested in playing Half-Life. Heck, if I didn't already own HL:S, I would accept a free copy of it.
