Poor latency on Sonic Fiber Optic Connection
I have a Sonic FTTH connection in San Francisco, with my PC wired to the router via Ethernet. In Command Prompt, I can use the Ping command to get consistent 3ms latency to google.com, 3ms latency to Facebook.com, 12ms latency to steampowered.com.

When I'm in CS:GO matchmaking, my latency hovers around 40ms - 50ms. Are there any steps I can take to diagnose this further and/or steps I can take to reduce this? It seems to me that something is suboptimal on the servers that I'm getting matched to.

It's usually due to the way your ISP routes udp traffic. There are services out there to improve gaming latency by forcing a better route.
Try different game servers.
40-50ms is absolutely fine. Even with fiber you still must adhere to the laws of physics.
Distance matters, how many devices (hops) process your data matters. how fast the server response matters and so on.
Your fiber connection is just one small part of the bigger thing called a connection.

I'm fine with it, just looking for potential ways I could improve my latency (and tips others could learn from as well). The more we can do to bring down our ping the better experience for everyone in the game.

NECRISS - are you referring to Gaming VPNs? I took a look at a few online but the ones I'm finding look to be targeted at folks outside of the US wanting to avoid region restrictions (can't find any that focus on gaming latency), do you have any ideas?

I thought I might reach out to my ISP as well to ask about their peering with Valve servers, but I can't find any public information on Valve's IPs or peering arrangements.
