Login is just a black screen after today's update
After installing today's update, I can't get into my Steam client at all. I've tried restarting my compute, checking the properties, etc., but nothing works. Every time I try to get into Steam, it just brings up a black screen with nothing on it. There's nowhere for me to input information or anything else in the window, it's just a blank black box. I've checked my firewall, it's not blocking anything with my Steam client. I'd prefer not to have to do an uninstall/reinstall, any ideas why this issue is occurring and what I can do to fix it? I'm not getting an error code or anything, the Steam login is simply a black window that allows no further progress.

Add -noreactlogin to your Steam startup to get back the old, functioning login experience and pray Valve never removes that workaround.

After trying every possible fix I could find, I resorted to uninstalling and reinstalling Steam. Even that failed to fix the problem. After reinstalling and applying updates, it just goes to a black login window, and any further progress is impossible.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Fun, isn't it?
As I mentioned before in other threads: the person who approved this mess for public release deserves to be fired on the spot for gross incompetence.

Thank you so much. Just checking, I should add -noreactlogin in the "Start in" section of Steam Properties? Or do I need to add it somewhere else?

In the Target field. After the steam.exe i.e.

[..]\steam.exe -noreactlogin

Where "[..]" is whatever path you installed Steam to.

Thank you, I can confirm that this worked.

You're welcome.
Don't forget to file a bug report if you want a (albeit slim) chance at Valve actually fixing the problem, so you don't end up being deep-sixed when they remove support for that flag.

Went to change accounts on my Steam install on another computer; and all I get is a black pop up window. But, since they removed the -noreactlogin option -- I have to reinstall Steam and hope that works...

Good job Steam!!! ><

So, apparently [at least with the beta client] you can not log out and choose to log into another account without it breaking Steam.

About to install again and NOT choose beta -- see if I can change accounts.

I found a solution that worked for me I don't know if it will work for you but I'll tell you anyway, what I did was I right clicked on steam in my task bar and started it in big picture mode, there I logged into steam, after I logged into steam I exited big picture mode, which opened steam normally, after that I went into my steam settings and I opted out of any beta I opted into and restarted steam and it worked, my login screen was back.

Hope this helps!

-noreactlogin is no longer supported by Steam
