PC randomly started crashing last night whenever gaming, little green dots everywhere
Hey all,

So I have a semi decent PC rig that’s been serving me great for the last couple of years, 10700K, 1080ti, 32gb DDR4, M.2 HD, etc.

Last night, randomly while gaming my PC froze up and I noticed my display was covered in small green dots everywhere. Before if my GPU crashed due to overclocking, it would just freeze up and crash my PC, restart, but never like this where I see green dots everywhere.

Long story short, since last night, I can’t play any game, the computer freezes up and crashes almost immediately. I’ve had to re-write this post 3 times now because even when I’m just in my browser, the PC freezes up, so now it’s happening even when not gaming.

I’ve done some minimal googling and I’m seeing numerous posts that it could be a sign of a dying GPU, which is odd because my 1080ti is water cooled and not even overclocked.

I’m already searching around weighing up my options for a new GPU, even though it’s not the best time and I’m trying to save cash these days but I don’t have much choice if this keeps happening. I’ve also reapplied CPU coolant twice now just in-case but it’s not helping.

Any ideas?

It does sound like a graphics issue. Have you tried visually checking to see if the GPU fans are running and running well, not gunked up, really dirty, caked with dust bunnies = not working as they should? The video card could be overheating and the fix for that could be something extremely simple like the fans need cleaned or replaced. Replacing the fans on a video card isn't difficult at all to do. Each fan is 4 screws and a pin connector plug.

Nvidia has the Afterburner utility that provides manual fan control. My GPU fans were going out a few months ago and I used afterburner to run the fans at 100% constantly to keep the card at a decent temp while the new fans arrived.

Fans get dirty regardless of how clean a person is.

Overheating issues in a desktop can be cured quickly and easily by doing things like:
- Lower the room temperature.

- Adding fans to the case sucking are in the front and blowing air out the back, side, and top of the case.

- If there are LED lights inside the case disconnect them / turn them the [F] off. Lights produce heat. Kill the lights, not the fans, of course. My older machine's case has fans with a single LED dot in them. I blacked out the lights with a tiny piece of electrical tape. A diode LED won't produce much heat, no, but every little bit helps. That tiny bit of heat an LED produces can possibly be the tiny bit that shuts your games off.

- Go in to BIOS and check in to fan settings. Some BIOS versions have fan control settings where you can manually set the speed. The CPU and case fans can (and will) help keep everything else cooler.

Another thing it might possibly be is a power issue. You didn't mention what your power supply was. If it's just barely enough shutting things that don't need to be running like LED's off can be the trick it needs or upgrading to a PSU with 20 more watts can be the solution.

Thanks friend, but all the above have been ruled out already. No dirt in fans, card is watercooled, nothing overclocked, everything was working splendidly for over a year up until this issue which Ive never experienced before, and it only crashes as soon as I launch any video game, within 30 seconds display freezes up with artifacts, even though I can still hear the audio in the background so all indicators point towards the GPU. Replacement should be here tomorrow so upwards and onwards!

Oh and the PSU is 750w which is fine for a 1080ti.

Do you monitor the water temperature or temperature of your hardware? I truly hope replacing it is the solution however if it's not the card, it's something else like a heat issue, replacing the card isn't correcting the problem. It will happen again and again until you get the cause fixed.
Ok so the 3080 arrived today. Amazon delivery left it at a building across the street from me for some reason, but luckily the neighbor called management and told them to let me know she's got my packages. Had it been someone not as decent, they could have kept it and I would have had no idea where it was dropped off.

Been gaming for around an hour, no crashes, everything works fine, so it was definitely the 1080ti at fault. But damn this card is much louder than expected. I spent the last couple of days reading some reviews of the zotac 3080 and I kept reading about how quiet it is and how you can barely hear it...let me just say this is the loudest GPU I've ever had. Like I can hear it even with my headphones, a very audible whirring sound. Not sure if this is normal because all the reviews praised it for being almost silent.

No joke it gets so loud I'm thinking of changing it for something else

What's the fan speed when it sounds like that? it should be pretty loud at 100%, but that defo doesn't sound right, this is what my Palit 3080 sounds like at 100% fan speed:

You can try playing with the fan curve, a brand new card shouldn't need the fan running much over 50% to keep the temps within normal range.

I just checked afterburner and the fan speed during gaming is at 100%. It's an aggressive fan curve. 0% speed all the way up to 30C and hits 100% fan speed at 50C. During gaming the car hovers around low to mid 50s so it seems to always be at 100%.

I'll try lowering the fan curve to around 50% or 60% fan speed at 50C. Thanks
Coorect the heat problem before something else burns up. The fans shouldn't be running that hard at 50C. Since they are that's an indication that something else in the case is producing too much heat.

My card runs around 70C and the fans only typically run at 30%. You have too much heat coming from somewhere. The fans shouldn't be running that hard with the GPU at 50C.

Hopefully whatever's up with the liquid cooling can be fixed easily and quickly. Maybe you need a bigger / faster pump or a bigger radiator coil. Myself, personally, I would scrap the liquid cooling all together and do the good ole fan cooling. I suggest at least evaluating the cost of switching to fan cooling vs upgrading or replacing liquid cooling parts.

You definitely have a heat issue. Something's not right with your cooling system.
