Desktop icons for games only the Steam icon?
Hello, Steam community,

I've been having this weird issue with my Windows 10 PC. All of my desktop icons are the Steam icon instead of the game's icon, and this issue happened after a Windows update. Right now my desktop looks like this: https://imgur.com/r4Tju3T.png

I've tried looking for a solution but every tip that I found was for missing (blank) game icons, and nothing worked. So far I've tried:

  • Reinstalling the games
  • Verifying the integrity of the games
  • Clearing icon cache
  • Running ie4uinit.exe -show

Has anybody else had this issue and happen to have a fix?

Thanks!

I know I can create a shortcut straight from the .exe file. Anybody know why it's doing this though? It's annoying to do this every single time I download a game.

Ive had the same exact issue but instead of my games turning into the steam icon, they turned into my browser's icon. Wierd

This actually happens for me when I try and drag an existing Steam shortcut to the hotbar for some reason, but the standard shortcut that comes included with each installation is completely normal otherwise.

As for any other similar issues, make sure that the default application for the .URL extension is "Internet Browser", depicted by a house: https://i.imgur.com/w15mxpc.png

This just happened to me as well today and my PC reset last night with a Windows update. All my Steam game shortcuts have a .URL at the end of them now. The icons are gone and even telling Windows to open the .URL links using Steam as the default program does not actually open the game. It just takes me to the game's page on the Steam app.

Something's up.

you don't open url links with steam... you open them with internet browser.

Well that's not what you were supposed to set it to.
