Safety for photosensitive users?
Hi,
I have a strobe sensitivity and visual motion sensitivity. They don't seem to be epilepsy-- for one thing my strobe sensitivity is worst at lower frequencies, such as turn signals and the slideshows here. They still blind me, hurt me, and leave me with nasty migraines and nausea.
Is there a good way to configure the client and configure web browsers so store pages are less likely to hurt me and make me very sick? Is there a good way to recognize games that may hurt me without having to try them and get hurt?
I use Waterfox 56 with a number of accessibility fixes, but something has gone wrong, and these fixes no longer block the pain-- slide-show. I haven't found safe instructions to safely configure other browsers for safety, and I'm not eager to mis-configure Firefox again and get hurt again.
Are there other good ways for people with classic photosensitive epilepsy?

I recommend a new hobby.
Steam should allow a Tag for "Photosensitivity Warning." it would make things safer for epileptics and others with photosensitivity, as well as save Steam some time/money on Customer Service from people who get through the welcome screens only to say, "Well, that's not going to work," and have to submit a ticket for a refund.

Unfortunately I have bought a number of games in bundles that were not direct purchases from Steam, so my boyfriend gets to play those if he's at all interested.

i did see that one indie dev added an option to disable those particular effects after it was brought to his attention. I would LOVE to see more games do this.

+++ I wrote about it in Russian forum and would like to see this tag too. Many games are made in such way now that can cause strobe sensitivity and visual motion sensitivity/motion sickness. It would make the store much better.

I also have chronic migraine (it can trigger migraines as well), and a number of advocate friends are suggesting forming a group to campaign for not only awareness and understanding to this issue, but to have the option to turn off these effects in games or on TV shows ( I've had to ask my boyfriend to summarize about half of season 3 of Stranger Things because the scenes are so intense and long!). I'll add a post with the link if we do form a group.

As for another hobby, with my photosensitivity I can't drive or take the bus, which limits my ability to meet up for tabletop gaming.

Really. I dont think people that are acrophobic should be taking up sky diving or tightrope walking either.

Well, I don't actually have photosensitive epilepsy, but I do have partial epilepsy and had one seizure (possibly) triggered by a TV show with strobe/flashing effects. The odds of that happening were about 7/100. So to suggest that everyone just "get a new hobby" is being a jerk, especially since most of us can't drive around whenever we want, and in the U.S., only big cities have public transportation.

Maybe learn something about it, instead of coming on a thread just to be condescending and rude.

It's allowed. Tags are user generated. Start tagging and hope others pick it up.

Keep bringing it to the attention of game devs then. The more Devs are aware of things, the bigger the chance it gets added to games.
