USB switch constantly disconnecting while using steam.
Hi,

I use a usb KVM switch to swap my keyboard and mouse between my work and home computers to keep the same usb peripheral setup without unplugging everything each day. This has worked well except while steam is running. Once steam is running my keyboard and mouse only work 1/2 the time, disconnecting and reconnecting constantly. I have tried another KVM switch, but still end up with the same issues. Closing steam immediately resolves the issue and I don't have this issue with other game launchers like EPIC.

Any thoughts on how to resolve this would be appreciated,

Thanks!

I run a USB switch for the same reasons and I always have Steam running and do not have this issue.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N6GD9JO/ (I've been using it since September 23 2021 coincidentally)

It may not be a Steam problem at all, just something you notice while Steam is running.

I dunno, try a different USB port. Try the switch on a different PC. Restart your PC, update chipset drivers etc.

Even if the issue only occurs while Steam is running as you say, Steam may not be the problem, it may just expose the issue for whatever reason. You'll have to do some more troubleshooting to resolve any underlying issues.

I did have some minor issues when I built a new PC in June, but I never traced the problem back to Steam and with a few updates and such things seemed to have smoothed over and it works consistently. Not sure if upgrading from Win10 to Win11 had anything to do with it, but I haven't had any issues since upgrading to Windows 11.

So out of curiosity what are your current system specs on the affected system?

Have you tried basic usb fault finding(i know you said its when you swap pc's
But try to reinstall usb hub drivers to see if it does anything
You could also make sure in hub properties you turn off "allow the computer to turn of this device to save power"
These are generic for the usb in general so might not be your problem

Thank you for taking the time to comment. I am using a very similar switch. I'm not sure what ultimately fixed the issue but I am no longer having the connection problems. I reinstalled a bunch of USB related drivers and turned off the "allow the computer to turn off this device" along with restarting my computer and trying a different port. So far so good, thanks again!
