Use PS4 controller support without big picture mode?

the latest windows update broke DS4Windows for a bunch of my games
is there a way to enable the full PS4 controller support (with configurations) without big picture mode

big pic mode prevents me from messaging which is really annoying when trying to give summon sign location in dark souls ;-;

As long as Steam Client is running, you can use the Controller.
You do not actually need to launch BPM to use the Controller, just to enable / configure it.
All of that remains active as long as Steam Client is running.

even with big picture mode disabled it forces big picture steam overlays

I'm tryna get the shift+tab overlay which allows messaging but can't seem to get it with steams controller support enabled

steam -> settings -> controller
bpm and desktop have their own configs, anong with chord (hold ps button)

First off, there is no disabling BPM
and the Steam Overlay works with a Controller just fine.
Use Shift+Tab ~ I dislike this combo cause most games use them, so mine is a side button on my Mouse.

disabling steam overlay in steam -> settings -> ingame or library -> game -> settings also disables controllers in the game
