API Scam

I was api scammed and I dont know what to do. I've lost over $500 worth of CSGO skins, I don't know how they even got into my account to do any of this because I didn't get a login notification or anything of the sort.

I've already reported both the scammer and the account that scrubbed the items from my account but what about the items?? Will I get them back?? They should be locked for 15 days since the person was never on my friends list!! This is the first time this has ever happened to me and I am breaking down crying cause I don't know how to process or deal with this other than play the waiting game. They posed as steam staff and I should have known better and that's what pisses me off the most about all of this is that I KNEW BETTER yet I was tricked cause I thought I got into trouble with Valve.

Not really, no. Dude's not talking like someone who does the scamming. Dude's talking like someone who's seen dozens upon thousands threads just like yours, from people who have ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up and refuses to accept that. The first couple replies from you in this thread are those of a kid yelling & kicking. Which is pretty much the same content as in thousands other threads, about the literally same topic, with the literally same content.

That's what the dude's posts look like. That other part, that with the dude talking as if they were scamming, is your own personal interpretation, just like "I've lost" is your own personal interpetation.

Speaking of "kid yelling & kicking", how many threads about this topic are there (hundreds from recent memory alone, way more if you search) and in how many of those did any Valve employee reply? One. I can think of one among countless and that wasn't even in this year. What is that Valve answer even supposed to accomplish, by your account? The few Valve replies that we've seen, mostly boil down to "this thread has turned into a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ so we're closing it, thanks for understanding". Which most certainly isn't the kind of reply you'd get anything out of.

You gave away your account details - the account name, the password and the KEY to the door the Steam Guard Mobile code because that is the only way a scammer (phisher) can generate an api key.

Secondly the account used to scam you is an already compromised account, it is not the scammers account as that would make it easy trace back to them.

From Steam's perspective (a program) you are using the account because all the details are correct.

So I see you are part of a group called "Hentai!" that has links to a site that gives free giveaways. You wouldn't have happened to have used said site or similar such sites?

Yep as stated the items are gone, they aren't going to undo the trades as it was widely abused in the past. Its your account, your responsibility. You weren't hacked, you GAVE AWAY, your account info.

If you allow yourself to be phished then why would you get a notification? That's like giving away your front door keys and alarm code to a burglar and then expecting the alarm to go off when they let themselves into your house.

You first allowed your credentials to be captured and the scammers to put a read-only API key on your account and furthermore you then accepted a trade from an independent device that was from a bogus trade offer which you did not verify.

Your account was already doomed before you got baited by the fake Valve staff - they merely accelerated and guided the process yet you had total control of the outcome regardless and ignored all the fallback security aspects on top.

Take it as a lesson learned and do the steps posted in #7.

I feel for you OP. I have tried for years to get my inventory items back due to numerous tricks that were embedded in the very design mechanics on numerous fronts. They used to refund only the Russian accounts. They only banned some of the malicious sites which are always using valves technologies. They made trading near impossible for humans and promoted the automation. I lost so much inventory value and personal information due to my account being taken over by a hacker. I later found him on Facebook. He stole my password and changed my email. I was able to get my email changed back once I made contact but I lost everything. There are websites that track ALL skins with the NFT variables like index number pattern ID and float. I tried to reach their legal department but they never responded. This was years ago and honestly is one of the biggest losses I’ve incurred financially. The stress it has caused millions of people (many minors too) is egregious and is a multibillion dollar scam that’s funded so many blockchains and will one day hopefully be settled. Previous lawsuits didn’t have 1/1000th of the information I have and could explain clearly in court. There was even a community member that was high profile that was fatally killed in an accident shortly after losing his 300,000 dollar inventory. I’ve been a steam member for 18 years and this could have been mediated years ago with successful amelioration for both sides. I should get coffeezilla to help us

You have several sites linked to phishing in your name history so no wonder you got scammed. Incompetence is not compensated. Someone with an 18 year old account should know better really.
