CANNOT CONNECT TO CONTENT SERVERS 2018
yesterday I tried installing a few games when it started giving me this error message about how it can't connect to the servers for it.

doesn't matter what game, can't install a thing.

tried reinstalling steam, checking proxies on my browsers, tried repairing the directory, nothing seems to be working

wondering if there's much else I can try or if anyopne else is having this issue.

Same issue, began mid-day yesterday affecting ALL games: "Content Servers Unreachable". Cleared downld cache; tried changing to different servers, nothing works.
Games remain in queue but never download.

I'm on XP as well. At least it looks like it's not just me. Guess we have to wait for Valve to fix it.:steamfacepalm:

my guess is DOTA 2 / Steam have already discontinued supporting win xp OS....ive been seeing similar post on DOTA 2 problems with other players using win xp OS....but with win 7 OS, DOTA 2 is still OK....those online game players whose CPU processor is the socket 775 (legacy) can still upgrade their OS to windows 7 64 bit / x86 depending on your motherboards build....i was using winxp before but migrated to win 7 a year ago when the game world of tanks and world of warships keeps crashing due to virtual memory problems.

That's not supposed to happen till next year :\

I just had this exact issue, both on xp, which im using now and on linux mint running in wine. I tried the solution I used for wine and it worked in xp!

locate C:\Program Files\Steam\config and open config.vdf in notepad

(the tree below will likely look very messy in the config file, to help click format, then word wrap in notepad. find this: "Steam" 0 {0
its not a "0" but looks simillar(cant post the char here)
directly after "Steam" 0 {0 paste the entire string linked to below( long as S#!T but it worked for me)

in the mentioned config, and under:

"InstallConfigStore"
{
"Software"
{
"Valve"
{
"Steam"
{

add the following entry
this forum wont show the whole string needed so please follow this
this[askubuntu.com]
and copy the whole string in the answer on that post at the bottom of the page and paste it in the config file EXACTLY where i said to in this post.

I hope this can help you guys.
Cheers

Im having the same issue as well. One day steam stopped working and when I fixed that, none of my games would download, saying "Content servers unreachable."
GreatGreyBeast Jun 30, 2018 @ 8:23pm
Thank you pceluvempathy, that worked for me on WinXP 32 (regular not wine).
Worked for me too. Had trouble removing the read-only attribute on steam folders but I figured it out and got my ♥♥♥♥ working again. Thanks a ton dude.

yeah, i find it rather odd that i have two pc's sitting next to each other, and have the same steam account loaded onto both of them, and one computer i get "CANNOT CONNECT TO CONTENT SERVERS" and the other can download with ease. I've tried logging out of one computer, both logged in... and all the steam support "tips" etc...

I apologize for the delay.

It looks like you are currently using Windows XP.

Unfortunately, there is nothing else we can do to help resolve the content server error you're seeing. You can try to manually update your SSL root authority certificates or move to an operating system currently supported by Microsoft, but we'll be unable to assist with either of these processes.

For more information on our changes please see the following article:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1558-AFCM-4577

I am sorry we cannot offer more direct help for this issue. Please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with.

Best Regards,
Isaac

The funny thing is that from that link, I quote:

For the remainder of 2018 Steam will continue to run and to launch games on Windows XP and Windows Vista
that they are actually supposed to be oblidged to help us out at least until the end of this year.

It does not work for Windows XP 64-bit Pro and upon re-checking the file, the contents are reverted back to their default values without the extra stuff I added in.... I see opened it in wordpad instead of notepad where there are two square characters that are invisible in wordpad, when opened and editing in notepad, it appears to work......

BUT doesn't fix the login issue where I can't login to post on the forums though:

Error
There was an error communicating with the Steam servers. Please try again later.

For some reason....
