Steam somehow prevents my controller from working in games
I have an old Logitech Rumblepad 2 controller and I tried to play Wreckfest but couldn't map any controls in the menu. I thought it was the games fault as I was running emulators such as ePSXe just fine but then I noticed Steam was constantly reading the controller inputs (I'm not using Big Picture mode) and for example the D-pad moved the Steam browser screen and some of the buttons were read as keyboard keys which seem to randomly change, pressing button #2 on the controller would produce a, z, c etc. input on Steam forum input field like this. Since the controller is working wonky with Steam and non-Steam games and applications work just fine I figured out it's Steam that is passing broken inputs to the games.

Is there any way to completely disable all controller support from Steam and let the games handle the controllers?

Steam settings, controller, general settings. Remove marks.

Does not work. I played with the settings and only thing that works is enabling the generic gamepad support which makes games see the controller as X360 pad. It also stopped Steam from reading the controller inputs on the desktop but it's not an ideal solution because now all the button prompts in games are wrong.

Using the beta or non beta?

You have unchecked everything and it still can control your desktop/browser if Steam is running but not if it's shut down?

A thing you could test just to confirm the bug:
  • Keep all check boxes unchecked.
  • Try a non steam game that definitely works with that controller and steam not running anywhere.
  • Try it with Steam running and see if it changes.
  • Try adding it as a non Steam game and see if it changes.

If you want a good game to test this with then you can try xonotic.org , it's a free simple fps that supports controllers and you can just unzip it somewhere and it plays.

If it still happens in the beta then report a bug: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/0/864957817327818370/
and link the report here.

Not beta.

All boxes unchecked and I can only control the Steam window on desktop, no effect on other software.

I played a bit of Spyro 3 on ePSXe with absolutely no problems. Windows controller setup recognizes all the axis and buttons properly.

Try the beta then.

Make sure the controller works well or at all in modern games that doesn't use Steam, emulators might be different.

No chance of you trying the beta?

Have you tried that controller with any other game you have on Steam?
