How to apply patch?

I've downloaded the patch onto the game in steamapps/common/[insert game here] but I'm not sure if that was enough to apply the patch.
Do I have to unzip it?

Well, not entirely true. Some games offer external patches, either to uncensor something or to patch to a version not available on Steam.
For example Paradox "Europa Universalis - Rome" has 2 newer patches that never hit Steam but that you can install manually in the manner the OP mentioned.

Is it a zip file? You’ll need to unzip it. There most likely will be a readme.txt file in there with directions.

I am trying to put a patch on one right now but it doesn't have any instructions. I could use some help with that myself. The game is Uncle Neighbor.
