How to enable remote mouse and keyboard during Remote Play Together?

Hello, I'm attempting to play some games over Remote Play Together with a friend that does not have a controller. When they join the session, I see the keyboard and mouse icons greyed out for them, and clicking on them does not enable them. My (the host) mouse and keyboard are enabled, and I also see my controller input.

Am I missing something obvious on how to enable remote mouse and keyboard? I can set myself as player 2 with my local controller, and I'd like to have my friend use the mouse and keyboard remotely.

Does the game in question even support this scenario? Out of all the games with local multiplayer, pretty much all of them support gamepads. A few support KBM for player 1 but not a single one I've ever heard of (and I'm putting my money on "not a single one, period") supports KBM for anyone but player 1.

You can work around this. Family-share with your friend so they'll kinda-sorta have the game on their account. Then join them with another account. That way, your friend will be player 1, able to use KBM input. You'll be player 2 with your gamepad.

Portal 2 allows KBM to control player 2 locally. I have the same issue regarding the remote keyboard/mouse being disabled for with other games, so I made it a general question rather than game-specific. Almost every post I've found just says people have been sharing the mouse/keyboard, so I'm not sure why it's not working for me.

So I discovered the problem. It's impossible to enable remote keyboard/mouse when sharing a link with a friend, but it's doable if inviting them to remote play directly from your friend list.
