Steam workshop virus
Hello, I searched for some mods on steam workshop but i was a little paranoid if I could get a virus (for example malware/spyware etc) and i read the terms and conditions and there is written that its not guaranteed to not have a virus + no other mention. Could I get a virus from steam workshop mods? (I play games like Stormworks/Cities: Skylines/HoI 4 etc)

EDIT: also if yes what are the chances?

The chances are basically zero and aren’t worth worrying about

Even if it would be detected like this, it would be false positive...

I think it would be difficult since the workshop mods aren't allowed to be executable software as far as I know. And the game itself would have to have a flaw that would allow mods to start running malicious code.

It's not impossible. But it's not very likely. And one problem would be any mod that's popular enough but is also malicious would get found out pretty quick and removed. And any mod that's unpopular enough that no one uses and it's not discovered wouldn't be a very good vector for malicious code. So that mostly leaves you the proof of concept example. Where technically you can do this, but it would be difficult and not terribly practical.

And in either case any discoveries could be patched pretty quick too.

So for my money it seems like an extremely low risk situation. Or at least there's probably a dozen things you do that are higher risk that you don't bat an eye at.

I meant if there would be chance that antivirus would pick it (theres none), it would be false positive, false alarm

The chances of this happening is really slim, and if there was someone will report it as there a report button on all workshop items, just like 3rd party mod sites again very slim chance as people report things if found something to be suspicious, or alerts were set off.

Your anti virus should handle majority of threats, and it would let you know if something was detected for suspicion, there can be false positives, but doesn't hurt asking to be sure if it was that.

if you are scared about that on Steam you might wanna leave the internet. You could get a Virus/Malware by visiting your Government website if someone were able to change scripts/add redirect.

It can happen anytime, anywhere.

Steam like any other content provider scans its uploaded files

Also the steam workshop disallows almost any file that can be executed like a dll or exe file

Steam as well as their edge providers scan all their incoming files for viruses

yea how do you figure? also if there is no signature for the "Virus" then what does a Scan do?

stop pretending there is 100% safety
