Downloads at 1/10 of my Capable Speed?
Hi all, I know this has probably been asked to death but the search sucks. My internet tests at 350mbps and steam is only downloading games and workshop at 3-4mb/s. I should be getting 40-50 mb/s. Steam is using at max 4% of my network. TIA

ISP advertised speeds are only as good as the site you are connected to. They advertise 350mbps but very few sites support those speeds.

Steam can support far more than that. https://imgur.com/a/UOSmU45

I have formerly gotten 44mb/s on steam. I have no issues downloading from any other platform.

Things you can check into, and see if can sort out the issue. Issues can range from user end, network infrastructure, or leading to server, and so on.

- Ensure you didn't set any speed limit via Steam settings.

- If using VPN, may cause issues for slow downloads.

- If using custom DNS service depending which one may cause issues.

- If using 3rd party software to manage incoming, and out going traffic, or even 3rd party anti virus affecting apps behavior may cause issues.

- If using custom firewall, and blocking thing could affect performance.

- Can try changing Download region in Steam settings, try another country like canada, or something see if anything change.

- Flushing your network might fix things, open command promt as admin, and give this a try, then restart PC and test, do things in order.

netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset

If not working still try these in order, then restart, and test.

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew

- Also reboot modem & router by simply unpluging power cable to them for a minute, then replug power cable.

- If client is not working correctly, and something wrong with client file, redownload client, to do this visit where you install Steam, go into the folder, and delete everything except for "Steamapp" folder, and "Steam.exe" file, once done, run "Steam.exe" to start the download fresh download of the client, and test to see if issue been resolve.

For information of understanding, the differences of MBps, and Mbps.

MBps = Megabyte per second
MBps = Megabit per second
1 MBps = 8 Mbps
8 Mbps = 1 MBps

Is there a chance this is just caused by horribly optimized workshop downloads? I was getting speeds in the kb/s when I downloaded workshop assets earlier then when I added Skyrim to the queue it had downloaded the entire 10gb game in 4 minutes.

It's possible, but I'm not sure how their package is handle for workshop.

Write all these in CMD then restart PC, works for me every time while everything else fails.

Thank you!

steam uses the Megabyte system of measurement (MB/s) whilst internet providers use Megabits Mb/s which is an 1/8 of a megabyte. Today I got a new isp and the advertised speed was ~100Mb/s and i only got around 12MB/s download speed on steam

I have the same problem... My network can handle up to 300 Mbs, but Steam always goes around 27-29 Mbs. It is infuriating.

I left downloading in the background and i saw peak speed of 440Mbps which matches my ISP deal
And for most of the download its stuck at 11-13 Mbps for some reason
I did a speed test and it showed over 500Mbps WHILE steam was downloadign in background

My laptop is stuck at 10 and my desktop goes full speed. It used to be the other way around. It blows.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
