Counter-Strike 1.6 multiplayer issue

My friend and I have downloaded CS 1.6 from Steam and aren't able to play with each other. He is based in India while I'm in the UK. We both see a different list of servers under the 'Find Servers>Internet' option and therefore can't join the same server. I also explored the other option: I clicked on 'New Game>Server' and created a new server game, and then shared the IP+port number with my friend. When he clicked on 'Find Server>Favorites>Add a Server' and entered the IP+port number, he received the message that the server isn't responding or accepting the request (something like that). Therefore, even this option didn't work. Can someone please help? Thanks a lot in advance!

If you are hosting listen server (from actual game), always remember write sv_lan 0 command on console then changelevel xx_mapname (any map what you have there) after that your server should appear.
