Being charged taxes for the wrong state?
I hope I'm posting in the right location. I don't know where else to go for help with my issue.

I recently moved away from Utah to Missouri. Utah charges a sales tax, but I'm not sure whether or not Missouri does. Regardless, I am located in Missouri and not in Utah. For some reason, when I go to make a purchase, I am still being charged the Utah sales tax. I've done some minor research to find out that I cannot change my state, and this automated sales tax goes by my IP address. What do I need to do to switch to Missouri IP? Is it even worth the trouble? I, obviously, know very little on the subject.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Have you changed the billing address on your payment method? If you're not provided with the ability to update your billing address on a saved payment method, delete it from your account and re-add it.

If you go to your account page:
https://store.steampowered.com/account
... near the top is "The following payment methods are currently associated with your account." and below that you should see any saved accounts. For whatever reason, the option to "Update the payment method linked to this account" has been bugged for some time, at least with saved credit cards. Just Delete the payment method from there and add it back with your new, correct billing address.

I'm going to take back what I said, you may need to clear your Steam cookies as I see it does store one to ensure compliance with local taxation.

You will need to log in again once cleared.

Suggest clearing cookies or using a different browser, yes, normally vendors will let a customer specify the state they reside in and not use geo location, because geo location is, well in some rare cases unreliable. If the accounts dept at Steam have chose to rely on that, it feels like an exploit, but NOT SO SURE that the geo location is actually saved in a cookie at all.

also note that states tend to change their tax rate at the beginning of the year, some do, most don't, but it's fun for vendors to catch up, so you want to weight up the time taken to create a steam support ticket and not getting any joy, and what you think you are shorted by. It looks to me like we are talking about 4.8% versus 4.2% . Do let us know how it turns out.

Utah sales tax - 4.850%
Missouri sales tax - 4.225%

Pretty similar. If you spend $10, that's a difference in sales tax between the two states of 7 cents.

Maybe Steam will eventually catch up, but meanwhile I wouldn't even sweat it. Unless you spend several tens of thousands of dollars per year through Steam, I don't think the state of Missouri cares about that pocket change.

If you wanna confirm if the browser is remembering stuff you can open a new window in private mode and connect to steam.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Pretty sure this was it! I noticed my billing address was still Utah. Thank you!
Thanks everyone for their input! I think (THINK) I solved the problem.

Oh well this is very useful. Thanks! Guess it wasn't as big of a deal as I thought. I know Amazon orders in Missouri are significantly cheaper than Utah, but I guess it's not that big of a difference on Steam. Thanks again!
