My account was just stolen
I have had a Steam account for 4 or 5 years. My 13 year old son uses it much more than I do these days.

I don't understand how this works, but he has his Discord account somehow associated with Steam. About an hour ago, a fake Discord admin bot of some kind convinced him to log into his Steam account. As he doesn't know those credentials, he had me log into Steam. If I'd had any idea what was going on, I would never have done it. I just thought he tried to play a game and was asked to login.

Shortly after I entered my credentials, I received an email that my Steam email address had been successfully changed, and I can no longer log into Steam.

I'm hoping that I can get my account back. I still have access to the email account that the account has always been associated with. I'm also hoping that I can get back the $5 that I just spent to be able to post from this account. :)

Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you

Phishing. You just fell for phishing.

To get the account back, follow https://help.steampowered.com/faqs/view/0A94-F308-34A5-1988

The five bucks are your smallest problem. Besides the fact that your son has no business using your account, you might wanna teach him how not to fall for scams and phishing in the future.

Oh, and make him unlink the account from discord, that's how they find their victims more easily.

I've gone to https://help.steampowered.com/faqs/view/0A94-F308-34A5-1988. The Reset my password link doesn't work because my email address has been changed. My account is now linked with an email address from Russia.

I need to contact support, but I can't see how to anywhere on that page. How do I contact Steam support to tell them that my account has been hijacked?

Thank you

Theres an "I dont receive the reset email" button. Click that.

I found a link for "I do not receive a Steam Guard email." There is a link under there to verify and update my email address. However, if I enter the non-Russian email address that used to be associated with my account, it doesn't find any account matches. I don't know the Russian email address beyond: m**********************@m***.r*

I need to open a help desk ticket. How do I do that?

Search by account name
will_in_missouri Nov 26, 2021 @ 12:27pm
Searching by account name tells me that it wants to send a verification email to:
m**********************@m***.r*

This is how I know I was hijacked by a Russian (or at least someone using a Russian email address).

If I enter my email address, there are no matches, and Steam has never had my cell phone number. The self-help stuff isn't going to work for me.

Read the WHOLE guide before replying.

A step by step guide to the Recovery Process:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1126288560
Also, because this regularly comes up, you DO NOT need access to the email, phone or password currently tied to the hijacked account for this to work. Just pick the "I do not have access..." or a similar option when asked. JUST SCROLL DOWN.

Use your eyes to read. Stop panicking, it'll make things slower and harder to understand.

Go back to that email Steam sent you that said your email was successfully changed. There should be a recovery link inside the email.

If you lost the message, or the link isn't working, follow the guide that people linked above very carefully and as precisely as you can.

When I go to this page:
https://help.steampowered.com/en/wizard/HelpUnauthorizedLogin?

it does not accept my password. I receive the message:
The account name or password that you have entered is incorrect.

I'm entering the same username and password that were phished from me last night.

And I've successfully self-locked my account, but the instructions on how to unlock it were emailed to the account's new Russian email address.

I was finally able to get to a form where I could provide Paypal account info/Invoice ID/etc as proof of Steam account ownership. I submitted the form and had an email within seconds that Steam had received my support request. :)

A sincere thank you to everyone who chimed in.

Good thing you self-locked the account. Glad you found a solution that worked!

Hope you regain access soon.

Keep us posted and updated on the status of your account, Will! I'm dying to know if you get it back or not! :)
