help: steam client only connecting with vpn
roughly a week ago my steam client would no longer connect.
TLDR: after long searching found potential steam server issues.
figured connect to different server via vpn and it worked

long version:
steam works on all the the browser account wasnt banned
i tried checking new for new apps or settings.
no new firewall entries. home network didnt change.

not knowing any easy way to check if steam was an issue i even tried reinstalling. (installing the games again gonna be fun). no go. it uninstalls and installs normally.

tried googling any ideas, something on twitter said something about some steam servers in select areas went down.

i don't know how to change sign on severs so i figured i'd try the vpn thing and force the server change. it does work. but unless i can change my login server on the client thats inconvient till they fix the denver client login server.

First you write in a Global steam forum, that mean rest of the world can say no we dont have a problem, and i can say dont be near current european current issue, that is seen as congested network and jamming even and worst network possible network.

VPN is not a solution, reconnect to turn it off again to see if that help.

rest is seen as check DNS server or change to 8.8.4.4 yeah dont user googles 8.8.8.8 then all use that because its easy to remember.
point is use own ISP is the right way, contact own isp if they have error in DNS normal that is learn from google, but as i said dont be near that EU zone.

ps.
another view point , if VPN works that mean traffic goes a diffrent way and works,, and you also make more jump to get to it, so you can say thats a ISP and you and congestred network in that region or whoever your nearest connection is, dont forget this is seen from network point of view.

this is not support and its a user forum,

feel free to reboot router and reset netcard and change DNS to ruleout own network connection issue, and go cable, wifi is not seen as legit faulth finding if you cant get it to work with bad signal. even if it work with vpn. ( you dont want a throttle connection to be a issue then you faulthy finding on the problem ) dont forget safe boot mode, and antivirus app that has been seen to block connection.

as you point out steam only work through vpn that mean some thing cause issue into nearest or block it. change steam DL zone but i doubt that can fix, no steam connection.

and then i say antivirus app that mean firewall in top of this, even ISP vip portal with open for steam traffic, if you have change ISP also.

That's the internet for you, sometimes stuff breaks and means you can't use it temporarily. Using a VPN is fine so long as you don't circumvent any region restrictions Steam has in place.

It may not be a Steam issue but a problem with the routing through your ISP, I've had issues in the past where I've been unable to reach a site because one of the hops on the route between me and the end site was down. That was fixed by my ISP moving me onto a different IP address.
Your global IP address may get black listed.
Better to try change.

1) Check current global IP address
ex) https://www.luft.co.jp/cgi/en/ipcheck.php

2) Change global IP address
ex) Change your router's MAC address and restart

3) Check 1) again and make sure global IP address has changed

4) Test on Steam or whatever you had issue before
Just ask your own ISP , if VPN work then you have own issue or ISP have a issue. because network is actual working, and vpn just proof it.
Help! How did you fix this???
Part of Steam network trouble shooting guide.

Known Issues with Internet Service Providers (ISPs)
Important:
If you notice that your Steam connection only has issues during certain hours of the day (for example in the evenings between 5pm and 11pm), it is possible that your ISP is blocking or "shaping" your connection. Please test your connection at other hours of the day and contact your ISP directly if you believe this is causing the connection issue.

Some ISPs have been found to block ports required for the proper operation of Steam and Steam games:
012.net (Steam traffic blocked)
Bluewin (Firewall blocks Steam from provider side - must be disabled through provider's service portal)
Dutch Telecom (Steam traffic blocked)
ISPFree (Steam traffic blocked)
Micronet Broadband (Steam traffic blocked)
have you tried restarting your modem? sometimes Steam has problems when your internet suddenly shuts off due to either sudden disconnections or blackouts.
I fixed mine by just restarting my modem and I can login normally again without touching my antivirus
