That's why the general advice when moving games (for example backing them up before reinstalling Steam) always is to copy the whole Steamapps folder. That way you have both the files and the app manifest. Copying the folder back and then hitting install in the library will recreate the connection and show the game as installed and playable.
So your idea might work if you have an app manifest of an installed version.
I do not think the actual files, folders for the game are actually any different between the clients, they are structured the same way, but maybe some form of copy protection (client based) to stop people copying games between different PC clients and getting them for free. Note: just a theory.
Note: this does not happen if you start a download in Steam which then creates the appmanifest file, pause it, exit Steam and then copy the game from a friends Steam install.
Mato, check if the folder name of the games are the same - I've just been doing this with Aer: Memories of Old from EGS to Steam.
First it was downloading all data but I saw that in Steam the folder is named "AER", while on EGS it's "AERMemoriesOfOld". I "uninstalled" the Steam download, renamed the folder to the Steam way. This time Steam said something about recognising existing data, went on to validate the files and continued the download from the EGS files present.
Good catch. Had not thought about the install folder having a different name.
Copy to the common folder.
All files, folders you copy need to be in that location.
Good to hear. Good catch by tintingaroo.
Enjoy your game.
