My only option would be to not support games and give them a thumbs up. I was hoping for an option of not allowing steam to send messages as if they were from me to everyone on my friend list just because I am trying to support a game.
Just because I am an old pervert and like a game and leave a review on their store page doesn't mean I wanted steam to send my daughter and sister a message as if it was from me saying you need to play this adult game.
With so many adult games now on steam this is a feature they need to add. I will never review another game until I get an option to not spam messages with my likeness to everyone saying I said they need to play this game. I think there are a lot of people who would feel the same way.
Personally I don't consider that "advertising".
I was just thinking they had protections in place for such things. Thank you for showing me. Just because they can doesn't mean they should.
I am not going to worry any more about it. I just will no longer review games. One of the consequences for what they are doing here. I hope people see this so they don't get caught by surprise like I did about what is done here. There are millions of us who enjoy a good adult game but I would bet a large amount of them people would rather not have it broadcast.
Word of mouth is the best advertising on the planet. People are more willing to try a product based on people they trust. its a good tactic imo but I don't want to participate and give them anything more from me.
No one got a "personal message" with your name on it from Steam.
Your daughter saw the recommendation due to your review on her activity Stream. Where it says you recommended the game. Maybe she doesn't know how the Activity Stream works and thinks stuff that ends up there is personal messages to her.
She may have also saw that you recommended the game when she went to the store page all on her own, the the atore page will tell her people on her friends list that own the game and will give info on people on her friends list that wrote a positive review, like you.
But i'm 99% certain that she did not get a "personal message" sent to her about your review or recommendation. Like no Steam Chat message sent to her, she did not get an email, or whatever.
She is mistaking some NON-personal message as personal.
It's what the activity feed is for, to have such things included.
Fortunately there is an easy fix of no more reviews.
A big thanks to everyone who gave me information on this!
Again nothing was *SENT* to her.
Yes it will say that if *she* on her own went to the naughty-game's store page.
It may have told her this information on her Activity Stream (same as it showed your review to all your friends on their Activity Stream)
She may have seen the game on her Discovery Queue and it said "this game is being recommended to you because Sarulle gave it a good review"
But none of those are what i'd call "personal messages" and they certainly weren't "sent to her".
She more "happened across them", is how i'd define it. Or the message was "displayed to her" when she on-her-own looked at certain areas of Steam's Store Page/Site
~
But ya.. reviews are public. If you don't want your daughter to see your reviews on naughty games, then ya.. don't review them.
Well within an hour of my review I was questioned about it by my daughter. We can change the wording as you like but right after I left a review for a new game that I wanted to support my daughter just happened to see that I recommended this to her.
Drama level over 9000
This is no different than you liking things on Facebook, or Twitter.
Once you make a public post, it is there for everyone to see, on those two services.
A recommendation on Steam is exactly like that.
You can avoid recommending or reviewing games now all you want, but the best solution is to not to have your daughter be on your friends list. :P
At least that will stop all awkward situations.
