Question about anime on Steam
I REALLY like anime and would like to start purchasing it on Steam, but the problem is, whenever a batch of anime comes to Steam, it has the branding of a popular anime streaming service that I despise tied to it and I don't wanna give money to it as a result. When I go to an anime's Steam page, it doesn't seem to have the company's name tied to it on the Steam page itself which confuses me. they currently own the license to stream it, and they seemed to put it on Steam, so why isn't their name attached to it? I wanna know where my money is going when I buy it. I'm confused of the technicalities on this.

Steam has a contract with Crunchyroll to publish their anime series here on Steam.
All the series you can buy on Steam are Crunchyroll licenses.
The streaming itself is over the Steam servers and the Steam video player.
The difference to Crunchyroll is that if you buy a anime series on Steam you get a permanent streaming license for that series.
So you can watch the series as often as you want and its tied to your account but you cant download the episodes. Its streaming only.

As who gets the money, Steam gets their usual 30% share for anything they sell and the rest will be going to Crunchyroll. How much they then pay back to the Japanese license holders, no clue.

Also all anime series on Steam are the same versions as you see on Crunchyroll, so in case of series with a lot of fanservice or nudity you will get censored tv versions.

Well screw that then :(, ESPECIALLY the censored tv versions. Fanservice anime are like the lifeblood of my anime taste. I dislike CR with a passion, and the sooner they go bankrupt, the better. I hope that Steam at some point partners with the companies that actually MAKE the anime and have subtitles for them.

thanks for clearing things up for me though. Looks like buying anime on Steam isn't the avenue I'd wanna pursue to supporting the shows I like.

Steam kind of missed the boat on streaming, and it might of been a good thing in the long run.
