Installing a demo for an incompatible operating system (for Proton)
Is there a way to deliberately install a game onto a non-supported platform/OS (Linux in this case)? I'm trying to see if NORCO will run on my laptop in Proton, but the store page won't download it because I'm not on Windows or Mac.
I know I could run Windows Steam in WINE (adding it to the account and then installing it with Proton in Linux Steam), but I don't have it set up at the moment, and I remember there used to be a way to add demos to your library by typing in the game number (from the store page) somewhere in Steam, but maybe I'm misremembering.

Try going to Account Details (Top Right), Preferences, scroll to bottom & tick Linux.
With all due respect that is the opposite of what I am trying to do. I am trying to install a demo in Proton that has no native Linux version, not have it hidden from me in the store.

From Steam Database, I got the App ID of the NORCO Act One Demo. It's 1601150. https://steamdb.info/app/1601150/

So launch Steam and try steam://install/1601150

That's the kind of thing I was hoping for, but it gives me the same unsupported platform message.

You can't just install Win32 binaries on Linux, it's a different operating system. They don't even share a similar FS.

What I was hoping to do was add the demo to my account, at which point I could go into Library>Properties>Compatibility and run the demo using Steam Play. It's something that people do regularly to run Windows-only games on Linux Steam.

Also, both FAT32 and NTFS filesystems are mutually compatible with Windows and Linux.

Anyway, I went ahead and bought the game (and it works!), so it's a moot point whether I can install the demo. I do wish Steam would Linux download and run Windows-only demos with Proton though.

I see you have things resolved for the current situation.

The setting you want to enable: View > Settings > Steam Play > Enable Steam Play for all other titles

...and aven after this I'm still getting "...not available on your current platform" message!

This is RIDICULOUS, Valve!! Windows games run perfectly well via Proton (or even plain wine)! WHY don't you let people install demos?!!!!
This thread pointed me in the right direction, but the menus aren't the same as they were in 2022.

Steam -> Settings -> Compatibility -> "Enable Steam Play For All Other Titles"
