Installing games on two different drives.
I picked up an external SSD, and I want to install some games on that. When I go to do it, it tells me "create new Steam Library on Drive D." Now, if I do that, will it interfere with the Steam games I already have on my main drive, or will Steam keep track of where it installed each game and read it off the correct drive? I thought I would use my main C drive to install graphically intense games like FPS'ers that I don't want to slowdown while loading levels, and use the external drive, for say slower strategy games and things that I don't mind if the loading time is a little slower.

It won't interfere.
Multiple libraries feature is made so we can install games on multiple drives
And there's also a feature that lets you easily move currently installed games between different drives.

No, you can have as many Steam libraries on as many drives as you like. Steam keeps track of it all. One thing to remember with external drives is that they must always be connected before you start Steam or the games on the drive will show as uninstalled.

Just a couple of more questions, if I can, since you were so helpful.

How do I go about moving a game from my C: drive to the D: drive. Also, if I do move a game, will the desktop shortcut still work, or will it point to the old location and not find the game?

If I wanted to use more than one external SSD, how will that work. If I swap one out for another, the new one will now show up as drive D:

If I try to save a game to that new drive will Steam look at the drive and have problems because the Steam app is expecting there to be programs already on the D: drive that I have installed on the first D: drive earlier?

Thanx in advance for any info.

Right click on the game in Steam library :hintarrow: click Properties :hintarrow: Local Files :hintarrow: Move Install Folder :hintarrow: choose where to move it.

Desktop shortcut will still work because those shortcuts are not regular shortcuts that points the path to .exe file.
Regular shortcuts tells to Windows "Launch .exe that is located C:\Program Files\blablabla"
Steam's shortcuts tell to Steam "Launch program that has this appid"
And Steam knows where that program is located so your shortcuts will still work.

Steam scans library folders on launch.
So, if you want to swap external drives, fully exit Steam, swap drives and then launch Steam.

If you disconnect external drive while Steam is running, Steam will still show games from that drive as installed but you won't be able to launch them because files are not there.

And if you connect external drive while Steam is running, it won't see games from that drive until you restart Steam.
If game files are on that drive but Steam is showing game as uninstalled, just install it to that drive. Steam will discover existing files and mark game as installed.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

I have games on 3 different drives. Steam will know where to launch the game from. You don't need to worry about it.
For me it's 4 partitions.
I have 2 partitions with OSes on SSD and 2 partitions on HDD.
And their letters are totally messed up.
On one OS I have SSD partitions on C and G and HDD partitions on D and F.
On second OS, that C partition is D, G partition is C, D partition is E and F partition is H.

The actual Steam folder is on my bigger SSD partition G, but it's also symlinked to smaller SSD partition C.
So when I use one OS Steam folder is actually on G but Windows thinks it's on C.
And on second OS G becomes C so Steam is on C on that OS.

In all that mess, Steam always correctly finds where games are installed from all 4 partitions and always installs games to the correct partition.
Even after switching between OSes when all drive letters change their places, Steam doesn't have any problems locating games.

I also am new at moving Steam games around. I just installed Windows 10 on a SSD and have Windows 7 on a HDD . Under Win 7 I added a new library to Steam libraries, I have 2 now. (Been sick so been out of the loop) I installed Driver Booster on the Windows 10 drive while physically there and could not get HL Alyx to load up right . Attempted removing the Win 10 library from Steam under Win 7 but because it had a program installed it wouldn't budge . I went tback to the SSD and uninstalled Driver Booster (an amazing ,useful program) . Did not realize Steam leaves a placeholder for uninstalled programs/games . Now I go back to Win 7 and see what's up . I will do a speccy report if it helps but it seems like I am doomed to move at least all VR games to the SSD . We are talking years of games, oldies to Halflife Alyx .... over 400 gs.
Anyone experience anything like this ? More later from this side
