Games and programs go unresponsive and refuse to restart or load.
so after leaving a computer running for an extended period of time (playing black desert online specifically) sometimes it starts running the game at 44fps no higher and if you try to restart the game it generally goes totally unresponsive after a few minutes. Same thing happens to any other game i try to load up. also other stuff like discord and steam go unresponsive and will not load. If i restart the computer then it loads everything just fine like normal. Curious if anybody might have some insight on this. any tips are greatly appreciated.

Your hardware is failing.

Check to see that the computer is cool and clean, open it up if it's a desktop. Use a program to see the internal temperatures of the graphics and cpu.

Also make sure that you're not using up too much of your hard drive space. Keep a good amount of free space on any drive.

When you say 'totally unresponsive' you can't open the control panel or task manager at all? Must reset or restart physically?

the cpu typically runs no hotter than 35c, the gpu no hotter than 45c. there's really not much dust in there to speak of.

i have an m.2 boot drive 250gb about half full, 500GB regular ssd about 60% full where that particular game is stored, and 2 2TB sshd's one is barely used the other about half full.

basically core windows stuff like task manager and control panel open up just fine it's everything else that loads up then just goes unresponsive. every game i tried would load fine up until the generally the main menu then just freeze and say its unresponsive. everytime this weird thing comes around i have never had to actually hard restart it i just go restart from the start meun.

If you can open the control panel when this happens, look to see what is using a lot of memory. Sounds like something might have a memory leak. If you still can't see anything obvious, start turning off any memory resident programs like those in your system tray, or turn off any start-up programs that you don't necessarily need. If it is a memory leak issue, you'll have to figure it out by trial and error.

it didn't appear to be. i did check task manager before restarting it and it said it was using about 6GB / 32GB of mem which is about typical. i also have page file set on the sshd's as well and they were reading 0% usage. i am familiar with memory leaks, had that happen a long time ago while playing a game, looked at task manager to find 100%'s on the ram and hdd's. i find it odd that everything functions at the same speed it normally would just it half loads and instantly goes unresponsive except the windows programs and software. and usually always the first sign of the "problem" is a game that just mysteriously starts running @ 44fps and no higher.

How is the ram seated? Anything unplugged or faulty? Seems pretty odd. Did your OS update?

double checked the ram, it appears to be in. did hear audible clicks when pushing them in. kinda eyeballed all the other power and data connections. nothing out of the ordinary that catches the eye. happened again a little while ago. sit and played around a bit. everything associated with windows runs and loads fine. (task manager, settings, control panel stuff like that) the game was running @ 44fps again but this time i moved the camera and it froze up and crashed. discord was also frozen up as well as steam and geforce experience. but i could load the asus programs (aura, gpu tweak, and AI Suite III) and hardware monitor no problem. also double checked temps and voltages again nothing out of the ordinary. they only thing that i found different was using task manager to end 1 of the 7 steam client webhelper's running would make steam start responding again for a few minutes. but didnt fix anything else. This has been a persistent problem for a couple years and 2 different PC's but would only happen maybe once every 6 months. now it's happening about once a day. i'm beginning to wonder if the SSD might be failing. it's about the only part thats original from the previous build.

from what I've heard SSDs either run or they fail, there's very little warning or inbetween. Even so: .... back up your drives. >_>
