October update and error 138
My Steam installation has failed on three computers with the October update. I first noticed that Friends would no longer log in, I'd get an error every time I started a PC. Then I noticed I couldn't get to the store anymore and the sale popups you sometimes get when you start Steam came up blank, all with the same issue, error 138. I tried the Steam help page on yet another PC and followed the advice to turn off my firewall (ZoneAlarm Extreme) - no help. Following more advice from the Steam help page I removed all mention of the Steam files from the Firewall applications permissions list - no help. In desperation I unloaded Steam and then reloaded it fresh. No help, and I lost all my existing games. They're still there on the M drive but I don't know how to reconnect my newly installed Steam application to those games. I have 6 years experience with Steam, never any difficulties, but this latest update has killed me. All of my other applications, including those that depend on the internet, seem to work fine. I haven't added any new programs of any kind for months to one of my failing boxes and when I fired that one up Steam worked fine UNTIL I allowed it to update to the October 14(?) version. I'm running Digital Storm Win10 boxes. Suggestions please?

Switch to the Steam Client beta if you are not on it already and test.

Steam > Settings > Account > Beta Participation > Change

or

Step 1: Open File Explorer and navigate to your Steam folder.

Step 2: Delete all the files, folders, and programs in the Steam folder, EXCEPT the Steam.exe and the steamapps folder.

Step 3: Restart your computer. Then, go to the Steam folder again and double-click the Steam.exe to reinstall all the components deleted in the last step.

or

Step 1: Run a command prompt as an administrator.

Step 2: Type the following command:

“C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\bin\SteamService.exe” /repair” and then press Enter.

NOTE: change to the appropriate location for your Steam install.

Thanks, Machina. I tried the last option. It executed without issue and the game icons now show up in my library (before they were blank) but I still cannot see the content on the Steam News window, cannot see my own profile, nor can I browse the store. All still say error 138. I used Task Manager to kill all the Steam processes, disabled ZoneAlarm, started Steam again, only to see the same results. Another suggestion, please?
Machina, I went back to your post and tried option 1, the Steam Client Beta. It WORKED! Whatever was broken in the current release seems to be fixed in the beta. Thanks so much!
