opt out of receiving gifts
hey, is there a way to opt out of receiving gifts? I'm extremely picky about games and just don't like 99% of the stuff out there. I hate being gifted a game that I instantly know I will never play and it feels so bad to either accept it and let it rot or click the decline button on a generous action like a gift.

I know that people not on your friends list can't gift you but that's a wildly extreme work around and I don't want to not game or interact with people, I just don't want to have to experience negative emotions and have a bad time using an otherwise great launcher/library.

Thanks for the input. I am aware that denying refunds it for them, but that's good info to put out there all the same.

I'm looking to hard opt out of being gifted to avoid the situation in the first place.

Frankly, denying a gift isn't exactly a wildly extreme workaround, is more of a polite "no" when offered a gift.

You can however throw everyone off your friends list if you don't want to interact with people anyway. That will prevent them from sending you gifts either.

Having something to automatically block gifts would give the same impression of declining a gift. I'd have no issue with someone declining a gift as I could send it to someone that would actually play it.

Depends on how it's implemented. It could be done right at the point where you have to specify the recipient, with a message like "This user does not accept gifts". Or, if you have to choose from a list of friends anyway, such users could simply be greyed out.

I don't see much use for Steam to implement something like this, though.

Misinterpreted what I said. Having to unfriend people is the extreme workaround, denying is simple but it's something I'd rather not have to do all the time.

It's a niche thing for sure, I'm not demanding they change things, I'm literally just asking if it's possible and providing a bit of context to explain the situation.

If they really are your friends they'll listen if you tell them "Pweeeeeeeeeeease don't gift me anything without asking first! That's rude!"

There, workaround done. No need for Valve to put in programmer hours.
