Steam reinstalling full game on update
so basically everytime i want to update a game, its forcing me to patch/install the full game (usually 40-50gb) before i can play it
and yes i already have the game/s installed when it does this.... any ideas?

Patching is not the same as "reinstalling full game". Patching is updating the game. Some developers can push out a tiny update and only update a small portion. Others need to apply a patch to many parts of the game. It's not unheard of.

Ok that's fair. The only area where I have concern is when big games like CSGO are needing this as well. I have tried on at least 10 games now and it is doing the same thing every time.

Regarding patching vs installing here is what I can tell you:
As the game is updating it says "Downloaded 2.1GB of 2.1GB" under that it says "Installed 30.6GB of 43.1GB" but on the top where it shows the % downloaded it says "PATCHING 70%"

So, I agree that patching and reinstalling the game are two different things, but it is telling me all of that. I can provide screenshots through lightshot if you want to take a look.
I don't need to take a look.

Downloading is not patching. Patching is the same thing as updating. What you download isn't necessarily going to be the only part of the update. I have several games that only download MB or even KB sized patches that end up patching the entire installation on every update.

Developers update their games differently. Some are direct downloads of files. Some are compressed and/or encrypted requiring them to be extracted beforehand. Others issue patches so that their users don't have to download huge sets of files.

There's nothing to fix.

I had this happen for dbd yesterday wehre it said the patch was only 300 mb yet was doing something worth 47gb, is this the same thing?

Hey moron, he knows that they’re different things but when it’s a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ 100mb update and then it goes and does 100 gigs of installing that’s what he’s talking about. It’s amazing how you saw him asking about something that doesn’t line up and just said “no it’s right and you’re wrong for questioning it”

Hey moron,
The name is rawWwRrr. Make sure to use the correct capitalization next time.

Exactly that guy is an idiot
Ask game devs, sounds like a total update change check and not incremental update, all this is still is in game devs options or choise.
So, something to add to this dead discussion, Dying light 2 got an update today and my friend and I both started installing it at the same time. He has a 15 GB update that's already finished while I have a 43 GB update I am still waiting on. It's the same update as well. We played multiplayer together last night, got off, and then this update showed up and is so different in size for some reason. so unless "developers update their games differently" means they make some people get a tiny update while others have to wait hours for no reason, I don't think Messier Moron actually knows what they're talking about.

Look we only try help you here,

This game is own and all files is not a steam problem game devs content, im sure they will talk with steam if they have a diffrent point of view in how to update.

DEVELOPER: Techland
PUBLISHER: Techland

and sense we dont as user have a clue in what was there before the patch or did you fiddle with content or modded issue if game even has such, before the update kick in then w are lost in known what happend to everfile and why update need to be so large,
dont get us wrong here we have all seen this, and it awful how can update now be full installation of validation of it every time ( almost, you need to be carefull what you think and know , reason is some here have way more experience in content change like server tech ppl here, but here as user we have no clue then we lack data before image and after , same as replace old copy so update can fix so you have data to compare with, and again its not our job to sit and test for why.

most here will accept the update, ( its more a game devs issue and stem with lack of info on why, and games devs did say update, and its not so simple then update have DLC's then you might get full update to all dlc that then learn you do not have the content and its security reduce the packed allowed , this way yes you get all things and dont need it, even i cant say if that is the case, just because it fit on some dont mean it does to you.

and it dont make it better if they have all in one patch. final update that overrule all previous files even that is possible.

and all this still lead to Ask game devs and the way they do it and tell or why bother tell user they have no clue in whats going on and most dont care anyway, except some of us that dont like a full install as patch. inother word that game is 60GB storage space , and i did not count dlc in top of this. this is why multipleyd by 3 is seen as most have in free space another issue why so many games update go bad is full DL is require, you did not ask for the last part , but ask any tech person here, its daily steam FAQ issue thenb steam user dont have plenty of free space in top of this.

soon 250gb disk with OS and win take 100gb you already is in trouble with 180GB if more things or huge texture is in the DLC or event or game patch after this. this is soon a 500gb hardisk.

be happy someone have a idea whats wrong, and rest is still game devs explanation issue and take steam option with it so game devs can tell this under download of game devs files , why im so big, incremental update ofr Full patch installer, dont forget we have seen this before in the online client , yuo fetch a preinstaller few megabyte, and client fetch rest. ( most here will not call that a game install. ( its the way steam and game devs do this or lack of explanations )
im not after steam or games devs here, its the explanmation of it so user as other here dont need to ask what is going on here. ( we all what the files, its the way things do it. )
im pretty sure if game devs said Full game patch install , thats same as final game update not ever debatable after such explanation from a game dev.

And you both own the same DLCs? (which may influence what files have to be patched)
also another issue multi steam account user, with diffrent game content and its dlc's , then checksum wont fit current user.

ps.
make steam support, and game devs aware of this, just because we have a idea of what if, its simple not possilbe to know every steam user in what they do, on each pc and the file or why things keep updating.
