Steam Refuses to Launch in Linux anymore
So, ever since I reinstalled my installation of Linux Mint, Steam has been broken. It used to work fine, but now all it does is open and close. I went ahead and ran it through a terminal, and here is the output.

Running Steam on linuxmint 19.1 64-bit STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically Pins up-to-date! [2019-07-26 21:11:36] Startup - updater built Jul 17 2019 06:13:47 SteamUpdateUI: An X Error occurred X Error of failed request: GLXBadContext SteamUpdateUI: An X Error occurred X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation) Major opcode of failed request: 155 (GLX) Minor opcode of failed request: 3 (X_GLXCreateContext) Value in failed request: 0x0 Serial number of failed request: 48 xerror_handler: X failed, continuing Major opcode of failed request: 155 (GLX) Minor opcode of failed request: 6 (X_GLXIsDirect) Serial number of failed request: 49 xerror_handler: X failed, continuing Looks like steam didn't shutdown cleanly, scheduling immediate update check [2019-07-26 21:11:36] Checking for update on startup [2019-07-26 21:11:36] Checking for available updates... The flatpak version runs fine, though it is limited in the sense that I can only use a single drive to store my games, and cannot make desktop entries. If anyone else has had this issue, do let me know.

I had the same problem. for whatever reason the MINT driver utitility offered the nvidia driver-BLÖB "nvidia-driver-440-server Version 440.95.01-0ubuntu0.18.04.1" as recommended. Which I selected foolishly.

Further down in the list is "nvidia-driver-440 Version 440.100-0ubuntu0.18.04.1". Do note the actually slightly higher version number and the lack of "-server". Selecting this version of the nvidia blob and rebooting solved the error message. Unsurprisngly a server version does not play well with Steam. ;-)
