Downloading game without using a CD (with steam activation key)

Hello! So i have pretty dumb question- I got cd version of one of the games that require Steam to install and play them. Is it possible to just add it to library with steam activation key and download it without needing to instert the disk in? Thanks in advance for your answers! Have a good day!

Yes. Activate the key and it literally asks you where you want to download the game to.

No game has a disk with information enough to play, this has been why digital updates and distribution exist.

Some older games may still ASK for a disk to be put in, but you can always google ways to fix that, as it's an error if the game's on Steam.
