I am unsure whether to buy a controller for desktop.
Two games I want to play with controller I believe are Playstation Games (Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain & Final Fantasy: XV) and I think there is some other games I have that might play better with Xbox controller (Way of the Samurai)

So I went to a EB Games recently looking for a Playstation controller for PC thinking that the controls would be easier for me (since I grew up with Playstation, but when my father bought a xbox (OG) the controls were cool too (Morrowind etc) ) the EB games told me they were sold out of the official controllers and only had "off brand" controllers...shudders.

This has led me to a dilemma, which one to get, a PS for PC controller OR a Xbox Controller for PC?

I am aware the some console controller are interchange-able with a PC (meaning you can use a console controller with PC) but I noticed that the method that SORT OF worked for me was using a third party software to get the PS3 controller working, and it didn't work that well. I had problems unplugging the controller then using a keyboard on other games, i think it was just the third party software. Anyways it's not important, I want to use an official branded controller for pc.

Deciding between Xbox and PS? is what I need help with.

I am also aware of the steam controller, but up until now I have not gotten a chance to test one before buying.

I hope to play the above games soon, it's unfortunate these games might get neglected all because of a systemic issue

I just want a controller that is plug and play then after playing, unplug and resume with keyboard, anything less would just seem overly bothering.

BTW I don't mind a controller with a cable, in fact I prefer it actually.

You can not buy a Steam controller anyway, as Valve is no longer making them.

I recommend a XBox One game pad or newer, an official one from Microsoft.
Add a USB cable to that and you have a wired connection.
XBox, those things are natively supported by games. Unless you got small hands, I got my girlfriend a Logitec F710 as she can't hold those XBox hunks comfortably. The F710 is also the #1 choice if you want a PS-like layout.

As for whether to buy a gamepad, I'm a PC gamer for lyfe #pcmasterrace and so on and so forth and I own 5 gamepads. 3 for my living room gaming setup (hard to host couch coop parties in a pandemic, but let's suppose it will be over someday), one gamepad for my desk to play games which are simply better with a gamepad on my desk and that Logitec F710 for my girlfriend.

Yeah, the newest Xbox controller is the best option here; it'll always be supported, updated and will work with most PC games. Any USB data cable will work. Bonus? it can be chucked off a mountain and still work...

Saying that, it's more important to get a controller you feel comfortable using for long periods of time. I find PS controllers very uncomfortable, but the SO hates the analogue stick placement on the X controllers and the weight on them.
Logitech make some decent low priced gamepad for PC and the recent models are Xinput compatible.

Yeah that's one of the reasons why I'm confused because as a Sony Kid I loved the controllers, going to friends houses with xboxs was always a worry because I just didn't intuitively know it.

Despite my favoritism to sony I might have to push for the xbox controller as the Microsoft Dev aquisition might lean more games to be more compatiable and native for a xbox controller, sigh maybe I should just get both?

I mean you gotta have a Sony Controller to play Final Fantasy right?

But then a lot of ports to pc have the remnant of an xbox past with controller screens that haven't even been re-coded to keyboard.

I made this thread with an Xbox controller in mind as I do believe Microsoft gaming market will blow up even more if they handle it right and make the right publisher deals. I mean gamepass is cool and the xbox overlay is a sweet bonus to a windows environment (win + g)
If get Xbox controller at least you know you have a native compatibility support as Xbox controllers are a go to thing by most.

PS4 controller / PS5 controller you have to opt in using 3rd party software, or using Steam controller support to emulate your controller as xinput. Not many games natively support PS4 controller, and there like one or two games that support PS5 controller.

If going for generic PC controller Logitech make decent controller.

Pick what you really want to use. I been using Xbox 360 controller for years for me it just feels right in my hands even though I have use PS controllers since the PS1, and I do have PS4 controller but I barely touch that, let alone my PS4 that been collecting dust, I used to use PS3 controller a lot before gotting a Xbox controller for PC, used it for emulators, but because PS3 controller support was using a really sketchy 3rd party driver it was the only way to get support, before DS3 existed years ago, it was annoying as it need to connect to server call back in order to use the app, and when DS3 was made a standalone offline, cut out the sketchy driver app it was great but was very buggy as doesn't work half the time for PS3 controller years ago.

Anyways IMO if want ease of mind with no issues Xbox controller the way to go, otherwise go what you like most.

I appreciate your advice. I wonder how MGS:TPP or FFXV would work using an Xbox controller? much difference?

Not really. Those gamepads have exactly the same inputs, just positioned differently. Same 4 shoulder buttons, same 4 front buttons, same d-pad, same 2 sticks.
The button layout the same, the only difference is that they don't have PS input display, they use Xbox input display.

I have played with Xbox controller and it's perfectly fine, there no real difference from using PS4 controller, other than your hands comfortability when using those controllers as I'm more relax with using Xbox controller than PS4 controller but that just me personally. Some people prefer using PS4 controller to playing their games.

I'll prob buy an xbox for pc controller then!

meanwhile I might borrow a PS4 controller to play Final Fantasy XV, any troubles with using a borrowed controller and the compatiability? I'm guessing I might have to use third party software to get it to run?

Well if you play game via Steam, then all have to do is enable PS4 controller option then it should detect your controller just fine, and emulate it as an xbox controller.

Or can use DS4Windows which you connect your controller to get it detected, once done, launch Steam then play your game, it will emulate as an xbox controller.
