How to categorize games properly?
Hello guys,

do you have any advices how to categorize games properly?

I did it mostly by adding them into "DeveloperNAME", "PublisherNAME", if it's a pixelart game also in "Indie" and if it's a series like Final Fantasy, BioShock or so, also in "SeriesNAME". Oh and categorys like my favorite types of games: "Souls-Like", "Metroidvania", "Diablo-Like".

Doing it for around 2000 games is very annoying and time consuming. I'm thankful for any help and tips :steammocking:

I suggest any sort of dynamic category
I haven't used it in years but Depressurizer is very handy for organizing a lot of games at once https://github.com/Depressurizer/Depressurizer

It took me years to get mine in a way I was happy with, there really isn't a perfect way to organize a huge library. The way I have mine now is basically

Backlog 1
Backlog 2 - 5
(in order of how much I want to play it)
Endless
Completed
Multiplayer

Then a handful for specific genres like RTS, Tycoon, Puzzle, stuff i might be in a specific mood for.

I hide games i have no intention of playing and old versions of games that are redundant.

But you only can sort singleplayer/ multiplayer and so on but not like devs, right? If the tags would be accurate i would use it also but so many games have wrong tags :/

I'll check it out, thank you :D

I'm doing it similar. Besides that i've menationed, i add games i (maybe) want to play in near future to a category which is directly under favorite. And in favorites are (ofc) games i play often, just like CS:GO, Dark Souls ..

I guess you're sort games like RTS, Puzzle dynamically?

I never said that and describe "indie" is always a bit difficult :)

As example: i've also "A Hat in Time", "No Man's Sky", "Yooka-Laylee", "Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem" on the Indie list. And Octopath Traveler in Pixelart category but not in Indie.

I use dynamic categories now and then but they are a little broad in how they categorize I find. (eg I don't want half life 2 in the puzzle category, just straight up puzzle games)

I categorize games based on their use cases. The SP games I'm currently going through (usually 2 to 3) I favorite so they appear on top. Then there's my Online category, obviously, for multiplayer games. Then I got the Beaten category for games I've beaten. I got an Aux category for games that are needed by other games but not explicitily by me (i.e. Oblivion, I use it for Nehrim). Then I got a "beaten externally" category for games I played & beaten before Steam, but may want to replay it on Steam someday. My remaining categories are Snacks (games playable in short bursts if I don't want to get into anything too deeply and games that don't have anything in terms of going through anyway), Couch (games with local multiplayer modes) & VR.
Instead of a "Imma never play this"-category, I hide the games I know I won't ever care about.

I have...

Favourite
Ongoing
Completed
Not played

But I only have about 50 games, 40ish of which sit in not played!

There is no one-fits-all solution, you should find what works for you.

I have genres mostly. When I had less games, it were more broad genres but as it grew, I felt the need for more specific categories. Now I even split them for Puzzle and Puzzle Platformer, or Turn-Based Strategy and Turn-Based Tactics, or Real Time Strategy and Real Time Tactics.
Only series with its own category is UT. Only publisher I gave their own category is Spiderweb, since their games were half my Isometric RPG category and that annoyed me. Also a category for Warhammer 40k games, as they're all over the freaking place.

I don't put games in more than one category. I hide betas and old versions of games. No need to keep the old one visible when I play the remaster, or the older two Civ4 (original and Warlords) when I exclusively play Beyond the Sword. I also hide multiplayer only games that I won't play, or really bad games.

It works for me.
