Everyone randomly, will lost their entire inventory because of the API key; the items will usually be taken at once, randomly. Because if they just outright took everyones inventory upon authorization of the API key, Steam would be more inclined to ban the name in usernames, and filter the site name even without the .com.
So, this allows them to continue the scam for a while, by making it appear as legitimate by letting people use it normally as if it's a legitimate site.
Don't buy stuff off-site, it can get your account in trouble as well.
Chances are you'll lose the item regardless.
Deauth all devices, remove the API key, change your password.
You know in a ponzi scam, quite a few people do make a profit and everything seems great for a while. They tell all their friends. Everyone gets on board. But over time one person here, one person there, everyone starts having an issue. Weeks, months, maybe years later it implodes.
What if inventory scam websites were like that, but more subtle? Why not facilitate a lot of activity and build trust and skim whatever you want off the top? Not too much, not enough to frighten the userbase, but once in a while a user is going to learn a hard lesson. Oh they won't be able to convince everyone else "who's never had a problem". And there's pretty much an endless supply of users trying to profit from the item system. Ripping off like 0.5% of users a little bit at a time would be pretty clever, right? You could keep that going pretty much indefinitely.
TL:DR; Ever hear of the "long con"?
