Csgo fatal error, please help

Whenever I start up csgo,

-> My screen goes black for half a second

-> Then my screen shrinks from 1920x1080 to a very very small resolution where I can only see a pop up message that reads "Fatal ERROR: Failed to connect with local Steam Client process
Please make sure that you are running latest version of the Steam Client and launch the game from Steam".

Please help, I've had this issue for a while now.
